We used to see a similar bug out in south Texas usually after a rain. Called them cow killers. Never stung by one, but I do recall they are tough to kill by stepping on them unless you caught them on pavement.

Agree they are cow ants which are wasp with legs as my grandma told us. I was stung by one and yes it hurts really bad. Like several wasps stinging you at once. When I see one now it kill it. No love from me.

I've seen em down here in Florida. But then we see just about every bug there is

I remember when they got so bad in Macon, GA in the late 50's that they had crop dusters drop B-B sized clay pellets filled with Chlordane dust all over town!

Covered houses, cars, everything with white powder.

I wonder if they'd do that today?:B
