You know, the most memorable places you have enjoyed a great meal while you've been on the road. #1. We went to Gaidos in Galveston TX. and I had a fantastic seafood platter, the wife had their prime rib. Fantastic. Nice place with interesting history. The bread pudding for dessert was the absolute best I have EVER had.

#2 was Taste of Louisiana Cafรฉ in Denham Springs LA. Its a little town outside of Baton Rouge. Here I had a smoked sausage Po'boy and wife had a French dip sandwich. Now, this place is a cute little hole in the wall in a quaint antique store filled down town type of burg. What an unexpected treat this place was. Food was fantastic and the people were wonderful. Dessert was a blue berry cheese cake parfait and wow, I wanted to lick the cup it came in. People at a table over from us heard us saying how good it was and tried to order one. We got the last one.

So what gems have you found??

IHOP in small town Alabama, not too long ago.

Late on a Saturday night we pulled into an IHOP for dinner. Aside from the two of us there was a large and rowdy crowd of 10 or 12 young adults who had been partying the night away. They were loud, obnoxious and rude to the lone waitress. She was an older woman who moved a little slowly and we could tell should have retired a long time ago. With a forced smile and grace she put up with the snot nosed brats. As they walked out the door she picked up the tab. We watched from across the restaurant, she bowed her head, closed her eyes as her shoulders sank. The kids had stiffed her on the tip.

The DH nodded when I slid a $100 bill under the ketchup bottle.

Good meals come in many forms.
Well Done!
I tip my hat to you madam.

I have a similar story involving a very pregnant waitress but I'll save that one for another day.

Very unique place. Dutch Frontier Restaurant in Ducor, CA, between Bakersfield and Porterville on Hwy 65. They are only open Fri/Sat and by reservation only, no walk-ins. They stick to steak (except for lobster tail). So they do one thing but very well. We just went this past Valentines Day for the first time. Expensive, but by FAR the best steak my wife and I have ever had. They've been there since the 60's.

Every one of these places is well worth the time spent.

They have a Newicks in Concord NH now out across from the mall. Used to go there often.

Not sure if still there, but Cape Canaveral FL, south end of the main drag. Little shack of a resturant at the end of a pier. Had the best crab cake sandwich I've ever tasted. That and a cold beer while looking at a hole in the floor that the local fish hung around waiting for handouts. Memorable!!

Back in the day, 12 of us used to do a week long golf trip to Myrtle Beach each year. Junk food all week, but our last night was always Chuck's Steak House. Great steaks and a fish bowl full of free golf tees with "Chuck's Steak House" printed on them on the way out the door. I still have a few - tees, not steaks.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

For the best steak hoagie, it has to be Sonny's in Hollywood, Florida where I grew up. I ate those sandwiches regularly, and only wish south Florida wasn't so far away so I could have yet another....Sonny's Famous Steak Hoagies

Best steaks and chops it is Jocko's in Nipomo, CA. All grilled on an open Oak Pit. Always a waiting list, but well worth whatever the wait!!

Cattlemen's Steak House in Stockyard City (Oklahoma City). Best darn steak I have eaten anywhere. Usually a long wait for a table but the adult beverages are cold.

Spoons BBQ (eastern NC style) in Charlotte. We camped near Charlotte for a month last year and probably ate at Spoons at least 8 times and brought a couple pounds back in the freezer.

Zest in Sandbridge Beach, VA has excellent food. It was such a surprising place. Nothing like I expected when we pulled into the parking lot. It ended up being one of the highlights of our trip the first year we went. Now we make sure to stop in every year.
