While on extened absense-frig on or off

We will be heading out after the first of the year and my be gone up to 3 months. I have everything in the house scheduled to either shut down or turm off. What is the general rule on the refrigerator? I have two, one in the house and one in the garage. Do I consolidate or keep both on or off? Thanks,
  • Turn it off. Why waste the electricity. Clean it, leave the door open. Unplug it and everything else that is not needed. There are a lot of parasitic draws on modern stuff. You may be surprised to find your electric bill drops to almost nothing while you gone if you do the above things. Of course you have to leave things like the furnace and sump running. And, I agree it's a good idea to have a neighbor of family member walk through every couple of weeks to check for problems. This is what my parents always used to do when they went to Florida in the winter.
  • I do not run a reefer if it is empty.

Anyhow, i have a neighbor give my house a walk thru about every two weeks.

I know that is a long period but it sure will beat months if something goes south.

Do you have a sump pump? I also have a zone on the security system if the tempo gets too high or too low or if the sum0p pump fails.
  • Had a refer quit working while we were gone. We make it a point to never leave anything in it that can spoil. Was glad we so that time and something we do every time we leave home. So my advice turn off or leave only things in it that are sealed

Depends on the surrounding temps. What you don't want to happen is the fridge being plugged in, the temps dipping to the point where the fridge does not come on, compressor locks from lack of use, temps rise, fridge calls to come on, compressor heats and possible burns the place down with no one around to stop it.

We have a fridge in the shop and put what is left in the house fridge in it and turn off the one in the house. We have to leave the shop fridge on so the neighbors will have a cold drink when using the shop.

We have never had a problem with any fridge locking up because of lack of use.

We have a cabin that we shut down for the winter. I've never had problems in the spring with the compressor starting either. BUT, I ask this exact question to our local refrigerator repair man many years ago and that was his answer. I guess just because it hasn't happen, doesn't mean it can't happen.

  • Got stuff in the fridge/freezer......leave it on

Fridge empty or doesn't matter if stuff gets warm.........leave it off/door open

I keep our house one on, it has things in it that remain good after a couple months. It also has a freezer which is fairly full most of the time.

The fridge in my garage is a drinks & beer fridge. I shut it off, unplug it and leave the door one.
