We worked out a budget that included needs and wants, matched that to income, made savings a "need" and carved that from the "wants" budget. You may find that you just have to say no to a lot of things you want.
That was fairly late in life, after about 20 years of putting wants first and getting consumer debt up to a year's income. So before we could start saving for special things like travel, that hunk of the budget for three years paid down debt.
Without a budget that includes savings, and the will to stick to it, savings usually don't accumulate.
