Zari has been off her food for a couple of days...has been coughing and last night started crying out in pain if she was touched and this morn was lethargic.....so off to the vet we went when he opened this morning..first off...there was a huge German Shepard in the exam room, tied up to the table...in all my years of going to a vet this was a first...share a room LOL, I was so worried Wayne would step on the dogs feet ....exam didnt identify anything...initial blood work was ok...so Dr Franklin decided to give her an IV with some vitamins to boost her appetite..he also sent more bloods off to Guayaquil for testing for Erhlichilosis...and then sent her home with the IV running....another first...thank goodness for floor lamps..makes a good improvised IV pole LOL ....she is feeling perkier..not 100 % but did eat a few bites of chicken....another first was how many people that came up to the exam room open window to watch her getting her blood drawn and her IV started LOL ...always an adventure here !

Hope Zari continues to improve, poor baby.

Oh, gee, you didn't need to worry about both your kids! I can tell that vet loves animals, though. Our little Poquita would've had a heart attack at the sight of a German shepherd that near her. Zari did really very well. The whimpering at a touch was back pain with Poquita (a 5 lb chi/pom.) She had hurt her back jumping off an RV step before we could grab her, and it bothered her ever after. I suppose pain could put one off her feed, in some dogs. I hope you find out what's going on. Zari still looks great. Funny that you were the local entertainment that day, as the natives had never seen a one-eyed, Canadian chihuahua before. :B

Canned cat food can also be an enticer. One of our dogs (90lb girl) can be very fussy about eating, but if I add a small can of cat food to her dry food, with water to spread the flavour and make it soupish, she gobbles her meal down.

Cat food only isn't a balanced diet for dogs, but added to her regular dry food, it gets her interest.

Geez when it isn't one thing it's usually another, especially when you have
multiple dogs.

Thanks for all the suggestions...we can get Royal Canin dry, havent seen any canned.. ...we put some beef flavoured vitamin powder on it and mix it up...she usually loves it...today she didnt eat anything or drink anything until 18h00...she was very quiet all day...hopefully tomorrow is a better day for her...our vet is very good...if she needs another IV he will come to the house and start it...

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about Zari, I hope she gets to feeling better very soon. I will keep her in my thoughts Nabi.

When my 16 year old won't eat and it's imperative he does because of the meds. I go buy a couple of glass jars of "Baby Food", 100% chicken 'only' NO other stuff in it. A dog in a coma will wake up and eat that stuff!

I hope Zari is feeling better now! Love the fact that the vet was keeping the GSD close to keep an eye on it.

Can you get Royal Canin canned food down there? My current foster stopped eating after surgery to be spayed and have a massive hernia repaired two weeks ago. She was feeling pretty puny post-surgery, and the only thing I could get her to eat was Royal Canin Mature 8+ canned food. It has an appetite stimulant in it. My foster isn't a "mature" dog, but it works, so I gave it to her. She even prefered it over human grade canned chicken or Vienna sausages! I'm now mixing it into her kibble and will hopefully be able to wean her away from it eventually...

Hope she feels better. A dose of an IV bag does a lot of wonders.

I used to take all my Danes home with an IV running.
I bought an old metal standing bird cage to hang the IV's on. Worked great and you could pick it up and take it outside for bathroom breaks. And they could get up and down without pulling on the line.

Also that handle your husband is holding on to in the car? Get a bungee cord and hook it on the handle and the other end to the IV bag. Gives you a break to sit more comfortably and more room to move around and hold the dog. Keeps it up and prevents the line from kinking. Many of my Danes came home in the van that way.

Again I hope she gets better you folks have done SO much for these little dogs. And to matter what crisis they are having to overcome they always look so happy in your pictures. They are VERY lucky dogs to have you as owners. :C

I know what you mean, if it had been Izzy the barking would have been crazy LOL Zar was feeling so poorly she only looked at him....and the GS certainly wasnt feeling very well either...I was walking by a massage clinic the other day and it had one room, with a large glass door visible to the street... I would not want to try and be zen on that table, knowing everyone passing by was taking a quick gander LOL
