Update on Maggy Rescued 9/11

Well it has been just over six months since we rescued Maggy from doggy jail. In many ways she has made lots of progress, seems to be a happy dog in the house when I am around, another story when she is just with DH. She spent her winter in AZ in an RV Park that was not too crowded and got used to peeing on the sand and eventually getting to run off leash. We have now returned to normal city life and this is not sitting too well with her. She likes her fenced in back yard as long as the dogs next door are not out barking at her but going for walks is a very different thing. We walk down the driveway and she is happy thinking that we are going in the car or truck but when she sees that we are going for a walk to sits down and wants to go back inside the house. For the past two days I have used her Thunder Shirt and that helps but she is just so frightened of any noises that she hears and really freaks out if she sees another dog. I know that when we first got to the RV Park last November, she took sometime to get used to trains and not having grass to pee on, so hopefully with patience and the Thunder Shirt we can overcome some of her fears. I would also like her to learn to play but so far all our attempts with this have met with her getting up and going to hide.

I have had rescue dogs before but for sure Maggy's challenges are going to take lots more time and love both of which we are more than happy to provide.
  • Maggy's a lucky girl she's got you all as her family!

  • Sounds like time and patience will be needed for this fearful girl. I have the same situation with our new rescue, Sunny. I'm not sure if he'll ever be "right"; only time will tell. Since you achieved some sense of normalcy while out west, she'll hopefully adjust to being back at home, too.

    Double ditto!
  • I have had some success with pheremone collars on fearful dogs. If you have not tried that, they are not too very expensive and might help her move forward more easily.
