50 amp to 30 amp

Have aquired an older 5/w with 50 amp service, which I don't intend to use. Still have the service cord, minus the plug. I wish to splice the 50 amp cord into a 30 amp cord. Anyone diagram the wiring for me? Thanks.

Why would you not want go use the 50 amp service if your 5er was designed for it? Doesn't make sense to me.

If you camp where only 30 is available then just use the 50 to 30 adapter.
First off, Thanks for the good info. all, worked out great. But now as to the why; Trailer went to a camp that will never have more than 30 amp and will never be moved. I had the old 50 amp cord minus the plug, but I needed twenty more feet and just happened to have a 25 ft. thirty amp cord with only a male plug. Makes sense to me, but I am considered to be a little on the cheap side.
    Good plan.

  • I would suggest against doing that. Your better off just wiring back in a standard 50 amp plug and then get a 50 to 30 adapter. You will retain your 50 amp capability for whenever it is available. Also 50 amp rigs generally have 2 Air Conditioners and with 30 amp service you will only be able to run on of them.

If you really want to do then wire both hot wires on the 50 amp cord to the single hot on the 30 amp plug. Neutral to Neutral and Ground to Ground. That will physically do it but you will be forever limited to that single service.
  • Both 50a hot (black & red) to the 30a black wire or the brass screw. Neutral to neutral, ground to ground.

Just do not adapt to 50a pedestal connector or the cord becomes the fuse :e
  • 50 amp side: Hot 1, Hot 2, Netural, Ground
30 amp side: Hot, Neutral, Ground

Connect the 50 amp neutral to 30 amp netural. 50 amp ground to 30 amp ground.

Connect BOTH 50 amp hot 1 and hot 2 to 30 amp hot.

OR just buy a 30 amp male to 50 amp female adapter at any RV store. They do exactly that.
