Normally you can see through the vents, to see if leaves, debris, or other needs to be removed. Depending on use, and location there can be more cleaning, of cooling fins, and condenser needed. The drain pan outlets need an occasional cleaning also.
I do have to say, many will neglect these issues, until the AC no longer works.

Uh. that only works on Coleman's. (Coleman's suck you see. That is suck air in through the condenser so the debris collects where you can see it and easily remove it)
Most makes blow (air out through the condenser) so the crud collects inside where you can not see it. What's more it's in an "inner chamber" so yo not only have to remove the OUTER cover but an inner cover as well.. Major pain on some models. 6 screws on others. - anon125Explorerthanks very much everyone
- wildtoadExplorer IIYes, take off the shroud and clean out any debris, spray the cooling coils with water to clean them. They are very thin so be careful.
