Battery Charger

Hi, I have one of those multi purpose battery charger. Not sure what to call them, but it can jump your vehicle battery, has USB ports, air compressor, etc.

Mine is totally discharged and I cannot for the life of me find the charger. Does anyone one know if you can charge it from a car battery with the car running? If so, do I switch it over as if I am charging the car?

Thanks in advance.
  • Also, what you can do is get a cigarette lighter plug with a cord, and splice on the barrel plug attachment of the right size, and charge it through your cigarette lighter port in your vehicle, as long as the engine is running.

If you do end up buying a replacement AC wall wart for charging it, keep in mind that the wall wart can severely overcharge the battery, if left plugged in continuously.

It is simply a poorly regulated power supply that will have about 16 volts across your battery by the time it is charged, destroying it.

I wouldn't leave it plugged in for more than 10 hours.

Finally, if you have a plug in car battery charger at home, you can simply clamp the jumper leads of the pack onto the car battery charger's clamps, and then switch the pack on, and it will charge that way.
  • A new wallwart transformer is probably a better solution. You'll use more fuel expense when charging from a vehicle than the cost of a new transformer.

As long as the label on charger meets the requirements listed on the appliances label, you can use any charger that you have around.

  • If your RV has shore power, you can jumper the dead battery to the RV's battery and let the converter recharge it.

I think you are referring to one of these BATTERY BOOST JUMP START units.

I have one like this one...

This should be able to be charged by hooking up to your truck start battery and will take a long time to charge

Have no idea how long this would take...

My jump start is only goood for one truck restart and then I have to put it on its 120V transformer over night to recharge it...

If I was going to recharge a trailer battery in an emergency than I would nose the truck up to the trailer battery and use jumper cables for several hours of running the truck motor.
The battery in the JUMP START unit is not a very big battery....
  • Yes, in about 4 to 8 hrs you can, if you don't smoke the little battery first,.....you'll run outta gas first !
Doncha have a little battery charger ?
  • Connecting a dead battery with jumper cables to a battery of a vehicle with engine running will indeed charge that dead battery. It will also try to steal the existing voltage from the cars battery but in the end, both batteries will be balanced in their voltage.
