Changing vent lids

Long overdue, I got busy and changed all three vent lids. It was surprisingly easy, taking less than an hour each.
We have two of these common vents, one with a fan.

When buying a new lid, there is no need to measure anything - they are all 14 inches square but vary in the hinge type. Get a closeup photo of the hinge and you will have no trouble finding the right replacement. Mine have a roll of sheet metal on the lid that slips inside a slightly larger roll on the base.

Removing the lid requires some disassembly from inside to free the arm that raises the lid.
- take out the four screws holding the outer plastic trim frame to the ceiling
- one screw holds the crank handle
- two screws holding the screen can be removed so the screen comes off (great time to debug it. I soaked mine in water to soften the tree sap spots)
- remove two more screws holding the barrel of the crank mechanism
- then the arm can be moved to allow the top end to be pulled out of the metal slide on the lid, through the enlarged opening at one end of the slide

From the roof, my roll in roll hinge has twists of the metal on each end of the roll - one has to be adjusted to allow the lid roll to be pushed out of the base roll.
The new lid came with the metal slide part unmounted; just two small bolts to hold it in place. The new lid slips into the base in the same way the old one came out and needs the twisting with needle nose pliers on both ends.

The Fantastic fan vent cover is a little different. One RV store had no lids in stock and was having trouble finding one for my old model in its catalogs when I gave up. The second RV store had one in stock that apparently fit all manual Fantastic Fans with no rain detector. This lid is removed entirely from the roof - no need to take apart the inside end unless you want to clean the screen.

I just removed the four screws on the hinge and pried the hinge out of the caulking. With the lid free of the base I easily slipped the lift arm out of the slide. Just the reverse for installing the new lid.

What is the difference between a $20 standard lid and the $50 Fantastic lid?

Well, they are the same size and shape. The difference is the metal slide for the lift arm is screwed onto extra plastic bases on one side. (Also two plastic posts that aren't used in my old Fantastic fan.). Perhaps pieces of wood or plastic could be made and glued onto a regular lid to turn it into a fantastic one.
  • I bought it at a local RV place. The sales guy said the were at a trade show where RVcare had a promotion on these covers, no doubt trying to take some market share from MaxAir. I also noticed the mounting was identical to MaxAir. Kind of nasty to copy MaxAir but it appears the MaxAir price is unnecessarily high in Canada - at least three times the cost of the one I got.

Yes, just four nuts to take off and the cover lifts off. I tested the lid opening before installing. It opens to about 45 degrees. There was a screen in the back of the cover, which I removed since there is one on the vent.

OK, looked it up. Canadian outfit called RVCare. You guys deserve a quality outfit that's well-priced. We usually hear how much more things cost in Canada. I liked the graffiti-based YouTube developing into their logo. So, I must reciprocate, with the following offering courtesy Roadside America. Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo, Texas

^^^ Who'd you get those from? The mounting's done the same way as MaXXair and CAMCO, at least the ones I've done. They come off easily enough, for the occasional cleaning, even without the hinge kit.

My warning about this install is to be sure the vent lid won't bind on the way up. That can happen if the cover's mounted too far forward (toward the hinge).

The more expensive covers, with more or different venting designed in, have very little negative effect on powered vents...
  • A hinged one would be nice. I am glad to hear the Fantastic lid is long lasting. It was the first to go on my RV . . . but a roof rake for snow did it.

This cover was a bargain at $20. I put it on the vent with no fan that is over the bed and awkward for DW to close. We probably will leave it open all the time now that it has a cover. I hope it doesn't interfere with ventilation at night.

Installation was a little more trouble than a lid - drill four holes in the side of the vent base to attach the metal pieces that the cover mounts on with another four bolts.

^^^ I can see why you like those Camco covers. The MaXXair-II covers come WITH a hinge kit that doesn't even call for a tool to swing open for cleaning, but it's an option that has to be ordered separately for the original MaXXair. I installed two different style Camco covers on my daughter's trailer and they seemed nice. I'm a fan of Mobile Trailer in Anchorage AK and Camco's what they had. MT is the kind of place you can trust in their choice of products to offer.
  • I, too, recommend a vent cover to protect your vent lids and allow the lids to be open in all weather. I prefer the Aeroflo since it has a hinged lid, itself, to allow me to open it for cleaning out of the vents. Remove the two screws on the front of the cover, and it hinges open to the rear.

In the "standard" covers, you can get the basic plastic or an upgraded (Lexan?) version. I believe Fantastic provides only the Lexan type. Also that they furnish replacements free for some of their parts, and I thought covers were one of those.

There are many good reasons to use Vent Covers. MaXXair is a common brand and the kind I buy. One of those reasons is they serve as a first line of defense against hail, tree branch, etc. damage to the actual Covers. Not to mention being able to open Covers on the road and in the rain.

On our trailer hail put holes in all three standard vents and did not show any damage to the Fantastic vent lid.
