Charger: Meanwell 10a or Iota DLS 15?

The only thing that classroom or book theory should be counted on to do is stir the imagination. Teach students how to learn. When the LA County Fair came to town they use to come corral me around 5PM. Starting at 6Pm I was in the fairground hustling from ride to ride, doing diagnostic point and shoot at ride malfunctions. Time was money. Diagnose, whip the repair crew to do it fast and right, in 15 minutes one to 200 dollars were slipped into a shirt pocket. Next ride, next diagnostic. Generator failure. A thousand bucks for a 300 dollar voltage regulator, but the fix-it-fast pressure was insane.

On Sunday as a thank you it was a no holds barred thank you at Tony Roma's.

Troubleshooting is a cruel, fun set of learning weights. A person either grows muscles or gets crushed.

Sorry I do not have the time or interest for personal attacks or to respond to some. What 99% of readers see as humor 1% take it as ridicule. The majority rules. Much of what is discussed on this forum is serious work. I like to lighten the oppression with humor. I do not spare myself as a potential target in the process.

A worldwide rule of thumb for battery chargers (transformer type) is two to one due to inrush. Two to one, what? Generator output to reactive LC load.
Switch type voltage conversion is less of a demand UNLESS you factor out enabling a lot of micro farads when a switch is thrown. A person has to work with this stuff to actually get an appreciation for what inrush does to a borderline sized generator. It is surprising and disappointing. Once a small generator (low mass flywheel inertia) loses volts per hertz the game is all over. Cornering frequency of 55 Hz.

Classroom theory is unfortunately often rudely interrupted by reality. Pontification from a lectern using a pointer and slide show is sadly inadequate. The lessons of disappointment in the field are hard earned and long remembered...

I can appreciate that the Iota meets a good workable specification.

That's a fixed 15V! I've seen agm's get destroyed with 15V.

It's an adjustable voltage power supply. A few of us already have one in one form or another. They work pretty well. Don't poo poo too much, some of us like to tinker. :)

Mex, link me that rectifier, if you would be so kind. Putting that on a switch might make a nice 2-stage charger, no?

Iota was never twice the amps. Twice the price, yes. Iota is 15a, this Meanwell is 13.4. Both show a max draw of 400w or less, which is fine.

14.3 to 16.5 voltage adjustment range is OK if the unit is solely going to be used as a battery charger with a protection shut off timer.

Running the positive output lead through a silicon rectifier will drop voltage .7 volt, and sags the minimum from 14.3 to 13.6

A cost effective performance accessory to think about.
