Chevy Traverse, CEL comes on and flashes, no code stored

Wife has a 2011 Chevy Traverse with 85K on the clock. Yesterday, she calls me on her way home telling me the check engine light is flashing and the message, "Reduced Engine Power" is displayed on the dash. It's running like cra$ and will barely go when she hits the gas. I tell her it sounds like it went into some sort of limp mode and to pull over.

She's heading down hill so she coasts about 1/4 of a mile and stops at a signal. The car is now running perfectly. She goes to her appointment a few blocks away and the car is still running fine. I come by and drop off my CTD for her to drive home after her appointment and tell her I'm going to drop the Chevy of at our mechanic about 3 miles away. Figured it at least stored a code that will tell us what's going on, ie, misfire, bad coil, etc.

I start it up and it's running perfect. I drive over to the mechanic (trusted guy I've done business with a long time) to get it checked out, figuring it would store a code that he'll easily retrieve.

He plugs his scanner in and nothing comes up; no code was stored!

He said it sounds like some sort of intermittent misfire but he's not sure of the cause yet. I left the car with him to investigate further.

This one got me scratching my head because no code was stored. Never heard of a CEL coming on but not storing a code.

Any thoughts?
  • A blinking CEL usually means a serious mis-fire. A good scan tool can check for PENDING codes.
  • you can go into misfire data and look at history to see if it has misfired. I have seen problems with the high pressure mechanical fuel pump cause this problem
  • Without a code anything suggested is just a guess. And I have seen CELs that go away on their own and not store a code. Hopefully it will do it again for your mechanic and he can identify what is going on. Plugs are due at 100k, so it's possible you have one plug that is EOL. It's also possible that you have a bad coil pack.

You might want to download the Torque app and get a Bluetooth OBDII reader. Drive it for a few days and capture the codes when the CEL is still on.
  • There are parameters for some codes. For instance misfires, you have to have "x" number of misfires before it will store a code. I would drive it until it stores a code or the CEL stays continuously lit.
