Dometic refrigerator use in freezing weather

We are going to do some winter camping for the first time.

Question: Any special considerations for running the Dometic refrig in the freezing cold? Not sure how well they might function in this environment.

The light outside helps.. Another thing.. SOME models of Dometics have a switch marked LAT (Low Ambient Temp) turn it on.. If you have problems telling on from off find the lever that turns off the light when the door is closed.

With the switch on the light will not turn off.

Mine does not, I jumpered it. (Will add that switch some day)

Last week it hit 11 degrees outside.. Fridge is still 100%
  • CamperPaul has the ticket. I have seen this before with the people camping in Alaska in the spring. Good Luck
  • I am currently wintering at Chain o' Lakes SP near Spring Grove, IL and last week when the temperature was minus 21, I had no problems with my refrigerator.

Like PT, I block off 2/3 of the lower vents and I also add a "heater", a 60Watt light bulb and a Thermocube® (on at 35° off at 45°) to keep the combiner from freezing.

  • Hi,

Duct tape on the inside works.

  • Hey Old Guy,,, should stick to Beer as it has some freeze protection!!! :)

    Thanks
  • Hi,

Depending on how cold it is going to be it may be wise to restrict the air flow by blocking off the two top vents on the inspection panel.
  • I had a 12 pack of soda in mine and the soda froze, I have one big mess to clean up now.
