Our refrigerator started having cooling problems with temp going into the high 40's.....we are currently on our second new thermistor.....freezer seems to be working but refrig not cooling....now at 5...

Freezer working and Food section NOT.......classic symptom of a blocked/clogged cooling unit.
Unplug thermistor leads at board..........run fridge overnight.
Food section should get down in temps if no blockage due to lack of temp sensing/running continuously.
Another 'test' would be to wire electric element directly to 120V power BUT you would need to monitor stack temp....could cause fire if cooling unit was blocked.
