Door window, sealing glass question

(mod not sure where to put this question)

Glass window in door is held in with 2 plastic rings. One ring on outside one ring on inside. Window glass is clamped in between the 2 rings with a small ribbon of what looks like silicone. I'm not in love with silicone most places on RV.

Being seam is not visible I was thinking about a windshield butyl out of a squeeze tube.

What would you use?
  • Op here....

I took out window, which includes the plastic rings (trim) and took it down to a auto body supply store. Lady there really knows her stuff as far as different sealants and glues. She is not sure if sealant is silicone or clear foam tape. Doesn't peel off like silicone but looks like it. Window never replaced before (2003 model) and silicone would of failed by now according to her.

Have RV window guy coming tomorrow. I can say that there is not a lot keeping your door window in or water tight.

    Thanks for the reply's
  • IIRC, the inside ring snaps out and the outside ring is held in with screws. The window itself sits between them. There is a layer of butyl tape under each plastic ring.
  • I recently re-sealed one of our door windows. I used butyl putty. It's holding so far, about a month.

The silicone on ours had turned loose most of the way around and I've haven't had good results with silicone and anything that could flex. Work great as long as the joint doesn't move at all.

We bought the camper used so I'm not sure if silicone is the manufacturers choice or the previous owner.
