Energy Command 30 Auto Start Question

I have a brand new motor home with an Onan Generator with an Energy Command 30 auto start feature. My question is this, Why does the generator only run for 3 minutes and then shut off when it has been started in auto gen mode? The generator will run fine and for as long as I want if I start it manually with no problem.

this is new to me, maybe there is nothing wrong, it may be just my lack of understanding of what it can do. My understand is that if the auto gen mode is on, if I lose the shore power for any reason the gen will start and keep the unit cool, I think this is a great feature with a pet inside and we may be away for a while, but after 3 minutes the gen set shuts down and never restarts again, a fault code"36" flashes on the display and that's it.

Has anyone else had this problem? Right now I am at a loss a to what to try to over come this.

BTW the fault code 36 tells me to check fuel(gas), that's ok, secure spark plug leads, replace spark plug, service air cleaner, I find it hard to believe these things are a problem, the gen has less than a hour usage so far, and it will run when started manually.

Thank you for any help
  • Thanks for the info Doc. We had to use it a lot yesterday, gen works fine on manual and runs as long as I want. The hurricane Arthur swept across the province here yesterday and we had power outages. Hopefully things are settled down today, at least no more wind, after the clean up I'll try to figure out the settings .

    Thanks
  • If in auto mode it will shut off as soon as the parameter selected has been met. For example if the temp mode is off it will go on if your battery charge is less than 12.2V. If charge is fine and temp mode is on it will shut off if hotter inside than set parameter or cooler than cold parameter.
  • The gas tank should not be the problem, it work ok when I push the manual button and it runs until I shut it off. The quiet hours are set for 10 PM until 7 AM, factory default. Plus the correct time is set.
I have not contacted the dealer, I was just trying to learn how everything works in the MH while it is sitting in my yard, if I call the dealer, they will suggest that I bring it in to get it checked out, in about 3 or 4 weeks. I was just hoping that someone here might know exactly the way the thing works, I assume there are others here that have one installed in their unit, and it either works fine or it does the same thing.

Its no bit deal, in the other MH I had it was manual start only and we got along just fine for 15 years, I just wanted to understand how all the new features work in case I need them, and as far as I am concerned some of the most expirenced people in RVing are right here in this forum.

    I'll check back again tomorrow

    Thanks
  • I can see two things wrong:

1: The fuel as described above can be an item. I'd make sure to always be above 1/2 tank since most onboard gensets are configured with a fuel pickup at 1/4 tank. I know that diesel fuel generators do not like being run dry, and it might take actively priming it to get it operable after running out of fuel. Gassers are less of an issue.

2: Does the Energy Command have quiet hours set? Quiet hours override the other items on the generator such as automatically turning on when shore power drops.
  • Methinks with a "brand new" MH, I would be calling either the dealer or factory for correct answers.
