The Epsom Salt battery electrolyte trick CAN work IF the reason your battery isn't charging or holding charge is because of a buildup of Lead Sulfate on the plates.
What you are doing is changing your battery from a lead acid battery to a lead alkaline battery. The Epsom salts solution reacts with the acidic lead sulfate on the plates and removes it allowing your battery to function again.
A more simple way of putting it is when you dump the acid out of your battery if there is a bunch of grey stuff that comes out your screwed one of the plates is toast and it will never work again. If the removed acid is mostly clear then you have a candidate for this procedure.
