Experience with replacing decals or repainting

Hi All, my wife and I bought our first RV a few months ago. It is a perfect fit for us - with the exception of 1 thing. We have a Fleetwood Bounder diesel pusher. The decals are starting to wear. In addition we don't like one of the decals at all (the Kangaroo).

I couldn't figure how how to post a picture. On my profile I have an image of the RV.

We are interested in:
1. Replacing some or all decals
2. Repainting

Does anyone have prior experience with this - and if so can you please share your feedback? Were you pleased with your project? Was it worth the expense?

Thanks in advance.
  • Stripping the decals can be time consuming and leave ghosts. Repainting is expensive. Nothing is perfect. If it was mine and I hated the decals, I would strip them off. You could always buy some rattle cans of automotive paint, strip the vinyl, clean and pret the surface, mask and paint new stripes on. Time consuming, but permanent. Good buff and wax the ghosts and they should more or less hide.
  • I removed decals on a Sunline trailer we owned. I used a hair dryer and plastic putty knives. WD 40 was good for removing adhesive and there was little shadowing. It wasn't a hard job on my Sunline, but you never know. I would start with the smallest decal you want to remove and see how it goes.

Replacement decals may be available from the manufacturer or if you look on EBay, you may find something else you would like to us. Or...look at other sites for auto/rv decals. On the back of our Minnie trailer, we had a decal that was the NY City skyline....a little homage to my DW being from just north of the city and for our careers spent in NY state!
  • I stripped off some decals with a heat gun last year. I can tell you from experience that if you get too much heat on your bay doors , they can warp or ripple.
I now have a few little "imperfections" that drive me nuts!

  • The way they strip decals in the body shops is with an eraser wheel. It's like a big round eraser you just chuck it up in your drill and go at it. Works amazingly well. It's a combination of friction and heat it generates. it works faster than you'd think too.
  • we have a Montana TT and the decals are coming off. I always blamed the sun up here as it does get hot. My SIL bought one this year and it is the same age as ours and it has been housed so to speak and the decals are coming off also. they want $1400.00 for replacement decals and I just said no, it doesn't bother me so let the next guy worry about it. of course I will take a hit on resale I'm sure
  • I have removed several decals but never added any.

I have seen some RVS with all decals removed and painted white. I like them that way.
  • take a look on Amazon for decals, was the route I went for our motorhome …
  • Took mine to a shop for removal and repainting. Cost a bunch but looks fantastic.
