Fantastic Fan on 12v

I haven't had time to run a test in the driveway.

How long does your FF run on the battery? Will it run overnight on Low and still have some battery left in the morning?

I know I need to change out the light bulbs to LED's, but is the FF a huge draw while boondocking?
  • I read some reviews that claim the 3 position version uses rheostat switch, but the higher number of variable speeds version uses a computer board that uses less power.

My interpretation is PWM is more efficient than resistors :)

    Stars,

That made me laugh out loud! If it helps I told my wife for quite awhile that solar wasn't worth it. She got a big laugh when I started looking at it seriously.

True story - when we were first married we had no grounded outlets in our 1920's house. Had to run the appliances on "cheater" plugs, etc. Plus we were nearly maxed out on the panel in the basement so we had only a few "new" outlets to use on the small updated wire we ran. So the window A/C had to be run on an outlet in another room, via a big yellow contractor's extension cord! That was run right across the floor in front of our bedroom door! For, like 3 years... tripped over it, cursed it and hated it. But DH kept INSISTING that it "takes a lot to change out those outlets to the new ones... it's not as simple as you think. It's a considerable project and the A/C works fine how I have it set up. don't worry about it, it's all fine".

Well after walking over that darn extension cord in bare feet one too many times I insisted that DH give me a real outlet to plug it into. His response, "Look, just wear slippers and you'll be fine. I never have a problem b/c I wear SHOES in the house". Grrrrr. So one day HE needs a grounded outlet to run a power tool and BAM suddenly he changes the outlet in 5 minutes! Five. Stinking. Minutes. It took him longer to FIND the correct outlet in his shop and get his tools that it did to change the outlet.... it was only a few screws and a new outlet. And he had me convinced that changing it would require running new wires through the wall! I screamed at him that day and ever since I NEVER believe him when he says a project is "too involved" :)

his supervisor (who had been married 20 years) told him how bad he messed up - that he SHOULD have killed at LEAST an hour in the garage finding the pieces (and drinking a beer) and to SLOWLY do the job, making sure to comment how difficult it was and how grateful I should be that he was finally getting around to it LOL. I still love him though.
  • My 5er has 2 12v batts. We just spent 2 nights boondocking. Ran the fan on low for at least 30 hrs. We also used the radio for a couple of hrs. 1 LED and 1 florescent light were main lighting for meal prep and eating both nights. Water pump for showers and dishes and regular RV lights in bath and bedroom. After 48 hrs my DC volt meter showed 12.34 at rest, starting voltage was 12.67. I have volt meters mounted just inside the door and always check them entering.

Forgot I also ran a 02 fan on 12v in the bedroom for at least 6 hrs each night.
  • This is why I went with the Endless Breeze.

Low setting, three foot distance is about all I can tolerate for breeze. Middle setting five or six feet. #3 10 feet. On low, by itself a fully charged group 27 can run it 14 hours and still allow starting a small car V6 engine (with a starting battery). Had to do it one night parked at a gas station in the toad.

Don't plan on fulltiming with him for very long!

  • Thanks.

Just wanted some real-life stories. I know I can find all the amps vs. battery life calculation thingies (or ask DH who is an electrician to figure it out for me) but I wanted to see what happened in the real world.

Plus DH wants nothing to do with setting up any solar or extra batteries in MY TC! LOL. So when I ask about how to calculate things his standard response is, "The battery is fine. It held a charge all winter. Just don't be stupid and you'll have plenty for a few days". This is followed by, "Stop looking at RV.net.... I don't have time to make the TC into a &^%* hobby - some of those guys get carried away. It's fine how it is. We don't need to spend any money on it". And finally, the winner, "Look, if you really NEED that much power we'll just stay at a CG and use shore power".

He doesn't share my interest in seeing how long we could boondock if we got set up better :) Being on the East coast there aren't a ton of boondocking opportunities that we would use for more than 3-4 days anyway.
  • I don't remember how much draw there is but when I had one battery I killed two days in a row before I figured out what was going on. The fan is in the bath and on a the thermostat. While I was out fishing the fan came on, battery was dead when I returned. Next day almost the same. This time I heard the fan running. I now have three battery's and turn the fan off when I'm out.

From the interweb it seems like FF draws about 0.5 amps on low and 1.5 amps on high (unrestricted flow).

0.5 amps over a 10 hour night is 5 amp hours. Estimating your 12V house battery to be at least rated at 85AH, you should still have 35 to 40 amp hours left after a night (considering a 50% max DoD).

Edit: Now I just read a FF that draws about 2 amps on low. Significantly more, 20 amp hours overnight. Still would work but I wouldn't leave that model on for several days!
