Generator Amperage

So...being electronically "challenged" I have a question about amperage on the smaller generators like the Honda 2000. Specs cite 13 amps max. Will this damage things like the convertor and inverter if a generator does not produce 15 amps?
  • No.
The generator only needs to produce the amps that the loads are drawing. If you're only using 10 amps you only need a generator that will make 10 amps. If you try to pull more than the 13 amps the gen. is rated for it will overload and shut down. This still shouldn't damage anything.
  • I tried a 2000 Honda inverter gen once and it did shut down very quickly. It did not recognize a ground default I was told.

  • no it won't damage the converter

however if you have a LArge converter and low batteries, the inrush to the converter might cause an overload condition on the generator

but if you have something like they typical 45amp converter and (2) batteries
and turn the fridge to lP and the WH to LP
there should not be any problems
  • If the appliance needs more power the generator will overload and shut down before anything bad happens.
As long as generator is working all is fine.

Amps are like Gallons per minute.

YOu have a "Mister nozzle" on the end of a hose, it only passes about a quart a mintue.

YOu have a garden sprayer it passes 5 GPM When hooked to the same hose

You take the adapter off and the hose passes 10 GPM.

It is all up to the "Load" how much is produced.

MY converter draws about 10 amps tops.. it's an 80 amp converter so that honda would not even be at full output with it.

Boy, I cannot understand this question. What does 15 amps have to do with it? Can you phrase it in another way?

I received answers to my question from several others...thanks though!
