Hello everyone! I'm brand new to your forum just today!I have a rv that I have been constructing for about 7 years now. It is a Kenworth T600 tractor with a 53' Greatdane trailer. A few months ago I successfully completed the rv title conversion so things are going well.I'm contemplating mounting my Honda eu6500 generator to the front of the trailer above my propane bottles. Now it rides in the rear of the trailer and when I want to turn it on I have to winch the trailer ramp door down and pull it down the ramp. Its a pain to do this and the generator is heavy!I figure if I mount it outside I will need to enclose it as well while still letting it get air somehow. Has anyone done anything like this before and does anyone have any suggestions?

With a set up that large, you could probably mount the genset under the chassis, the way they do with some of those refrigeration units on the road.Being that you have a "custom" set-up, you'll have to think outside the box, to figure this out?A few pictures would be great, and help us get an idea of just what you have....and maybe make some suggestions:)Welcome to the forum....lots of great minds here!!! and then there are the rest of us:B

I'll try to get a few pictures for you guys. I was going to mount it on the truck for the longest time but i'm not sure how to get the power back to the trailer due to the articulation of the truck and trailer turning. I want it to bed hands off as possible so if I pull into a rest area at night I don't have to do anything but push the remote starter button.

I would mount it on the tractor, without question. I would be inclined to modify the trailer side to accept a locking inlet plug (NOT a double-male suicide cord). Then I would use a SHORT custom-sized cord for OTR travel, and then longer cords as needed when camping.If space allows, I would try to fab some sort of articulated arm for the gennie, so that I could easily set it on the ground.Forum member "Professor95" mounted a small gennie on his tractor, if memory serves.As said previously, PICS!

I would put it on the tractor. Really, I would sell it and get a DIESEL gen for on the tractor. A cord is easy to make. You just need some rubber cord and appropriate twist-lock ends. Use a "flanged inlet" on the trailer.If I put it on the trailer I'd put it underneath if possible.By the way. Let's see some pictures of this thing. It sounds really cool!!

I like the honds eu6500 because it will only run the rpm that it needs. Most generators run at idle then kick up to full throttle when the smallest electrical draw is present. Please feel free to educate me further on this if u have a better idea of a specific generator.I have been trying to get u guys pictures. I need help here. I have an Iphone 4s and I linked it to this brand new computer and the photos are on this computer, I cant get them up so u can see them....help!

Thanks for the advice. I haven't put a lot of thought into installing it on the deck of the truck. the air lines exit the truck right there as well so I would have to contend with that.
other than that it should work. In the past I have borrowed an eu3000 and we would haul it to the event and then set it up there on the deck and it worked out well. As you mentioned I was nervous about it getting stolen.
Obviously lifting generators on a daily basis is something I am trying to eliminate. It gets really old when we all showered for the trip home and left the generator outside running so we could have the air on and then get all sweaty again putting the generator up the ramp on a hot day.

You could try mounting in on the truck between the cab & the king pin in some form of a "doghouse". I'm quite sure with your skills, you can create some kind of lockable box that will keep it from getting stolen, yet with providing enough ventilation to keep it cool. I think that mounting it above the propane tank would be a pain in the a** to fill up.

I forgot to mention that I have a 2nd generator. Its an engine driven welder/generator. It is powerful enough to power the rv but its louder than it needs to be so I have been considering installing it below the truck sleeper and the eu6500 above the propane bottles pictured.

I use the welder generator occasionally at the racing events I attend but the eu is used at every event. what do u guys think?

Thanks a lot for posting my pictures for me! Now that everyone can see my rv I hope to hear some more thoughts on where to mount the generator. perhaps seeing the rv will help confirm or give new thoughts.

Getting back to placement of the generator, how would you make a nice covered home for it and yet let it get enough air so it doesn't overheat? Has anyone ever done something similar before?

I like the diesel inverter idea. I just looked the onan 6000 watt unit and it was over 7 grand. I cannot afford that kind of money at this point. thanks for the onan information though!

If the onan diesel is an inverter than it does sound like a good idea. How much does one of those units cost I wonder?
