Honda clone gx200 electric key start

Stop "cloneing" around and buy the original. I have found the best way to charge the batteries is with a smart plug i charger. My EU 1000 charges a steady 8 amps. My smart charger begins charging with choice of 2, 15, 25 or 40 amps. Just more effecient and cuts down on genny time for which my neighbors are greatful

Twice, does not come with instructions, you can Google them. Will need additional mounting bolts, not supplied. Will also need to trim the front cover to clear the nose of the starter and relocate the on/off switch.

Harbor freights are not clones, I have a Honda clone. I know the starter kits fit but this is all about the electrical portion. If anyone can answer the questions above your help is appreciated.

I think that you need to explain what you plan on charging. Most people on an RV forum are going to think that a GX200 is some sort of generator.

True, Well I plan to run a 12v battery and a few lights on a gx200 motor.
The kit comes with a 3 amp coil, it has the mounting holes to add another to the moto but I want to know if the electric start module can handle another coil.

The extra "coil" is for charging the BATTERY.. Hence the 3A "rating"..

That 3A "coil" is the item in the middle of the pix below with one wire sticking out of it..



3A is NOT MUCH CURRENT to work with so no, you are not going to be able to run lights off this kit.

I really doubt that adding a second 12V at 3A coil is going to work, that coil will have AC output, it would go into the switch module and inside that should be a rectifier to get 12V.. This would also be UNREGULATED 12V at that point. You would most likely have to add your own rectifier diode since I doubt the internal would be robust enough to handle 6A.

For what it is worth, that would be a huge waste of the engine and fuel to run it ONLY for 3A at 12V.. That is about 40W of power from an engine size of 3Kw-3.5Kw..

If you want any substantial amperage your are much better off adding a external car alternator with built in regulator to the engine.. You can get 60A-100A car alternators dirt cheap..

I'm going to assume that you aren't adding the starter kit just to start this engine. It's only 5 HP or so and if it starts like typical Honda engines of this size, it isn't needed.
The coil included in the kit is only enough current to keep the engine running and a small bit of extra current to charge the battery. It's not sized or designed to power any auxiliary 12V devices. Any added coils that are powered by the flywheel magnet will be similar in output.

If you attached a series of magnets on the flywheel and surrounded that with a series of wound coils (in effect making a stator/generator), I think you'd be pretty disappointed with the output.

Like Gdetrailer recommends, using a car alternator will net you a few amps but don't expect big power from the combination.

Thanks for your help, I am using this motor on a mini bike build. I know the RV forum isn't for that but you guys have the knowledge I need. I need enough amp to run a led headlight, taillight , signals and to charge battery. I could add a rectifier to have stable 12vdc. All the led lights are about 3amps.

It will take more than a rectifier to make a steady "12V", magneto style alternators will have a output voltage that varies GREATLY with the engine RPM.

At idle it may be as low as 12V but at full throttle it could be 15V or a bit higher, making the lights go from extreme dim at idle to extreme bright at full throttle and even to the point of blowing up the light (too high of a voltage).

You will need to use a rectifier AND a REGULATOR to steady the voltage..

The original coil/rectifier uses the battery as a voltage regulator but if you connect the two together and use a small motorcycle size battery you would easily over charge the battery..

Typically small engines with starters like found in lawn tractors will have a better charging system alternator which typically will supply 10A-15A for battery charging AND some lights..

In that case, go for the double coil. With a typical small motorcycle battery, you should be OK. Monitor the battery's voltage after use, you may need to charge it occasionally.
