Honda is 3000 generator and Magnum hybrid inverter charger

The other day in Dead valley I for the first time used our generater for running ouer air condition after using inverter for running microwave, after a short time pover disappeared but after shouting of air conditioning pover back on, no breakers shut of, now I have read that when using generater to turn of battery charger but as this is automatically started when power sent to FW can I turn this of ? And it seams also fairly pointless to do so when wanting to recharge batteries. We have 600W of solar and 520A of batteries. Any help and suggestions.
Frank.
  • I don't think I still had inverter on, it really seams back to front to use batteries as support if charging them. I will try to lover setting to say 23A and try too run generater with only air conditioning first and then maybe try to start microwave, it will properly have to wait a week as in RV resort at the moment unles I get ther permission to try it..

  • Hi MrWizard,

If the setting is at 23 amps and the inverter is on, then the Magnum is in load support mode. If the roof air is running and the microwave is started, then the additional power to support the load is drawn from the battery bank. It is not intended to do voltage support.
  • in case your wondering
when you set the limit, it sets the max the magnum will alow to be used from the source, so the batteries are charging, and you turn on the a/c etc..
when it hits 23 amps source input, it reduces charge power used to keep the load at 23amps or less
it partial prevention of input power shore/generator overload
don't know what it will do if you turn on two high draw items that exceeds input power
that might be PT's load/voltage support, where the inverter function comes on and you start using battery power along with the 120v input power
  • Thanks Pianotuna and Time2roll I am still learning, will dial down setting.

  • Yes Honda 3000 is rated 23.3 amps and you have the Magnum set to pull 30 amps.... what could go wrong ;)
  • Hi,

The remote does not limit the inverter output. But it is 3000 watts or about 25 amps @ 120 volts. That should be ample for any microwave.

My microwave is 1591 watts so it draws 160 amps @ 12 volts. You need good thick cables and a large battery bank for it to work well.

OK thanks. it's the Magnum MSH3012M and we have the remote which is set for 30amp so will try the change this. The generator is not easy to get to so used the inverter for microwave. If wanting air in future will start generator before using any large load.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

    On the Magnum remote,

    push the favs button

rotate the dial until F3 (input amps) is displayed

push the dial and rotate until 23 amps is displayed

    push the dial again.

If the inverter is set to "on" then the Magnum is in load support mode. This works with any external power source (shore, generator, etc.)

This should allow the OP to run the Honda with the eco switch on. Surges from the air conditioner starting may taken care of, and the generator should not over load, even when more than 23 amps are being drawn (microwave and air conditioner for example).

The Magnum will use any excess power to recharge the battery bank.

I've ordered a micro air easy start kit for my air conditioner.
  • The problem is not, that you need to turn off the charger
The problem is you did not give the batteries time to recover
And the charger did what it was supposed to do

But yes with some magnum models you can set the power input level to a lower level, and minimize the charge power used ( tell it you have a 10 amp power source )

Post the model number of the magnum
Somebody will be able to give you the instructions for changing the power settings

    P.s.
I would have used the generator for the MW, so the batteries stayed charged and then there would not be any surge drain / charge on them and I could turn on the the A/C

    Btw
We have 600+ watts of solar and 675 ah of AGM batteries, and a 3000 watt generator,

And I prefer to use the generator for the MW, unless it is quiet hours

During the day we use the generator
And if I need to switch on the A/C , possible over load conditions are minimized, because there will not be a big charge surge replacing what I just took out
