- wa8yxmExplorer IIISome of this depends on the heater make and model.
SOME use Electricity OR gas
Some Electricity and/OR gas
Some only gas.
This post addresses only the AND/OR types
Faster recovery: YES it will re-heat faster with both modes active
Cost IF you are paying for electricity, you need to know the cost compairson formula, which alas I HAVE NEVER BOOKMARKED and thus do not rememober. I will leave it up to others.
Where I am parked, under the terms of my agreement with the park (Standard membership contract) Electricity is "included" in the monthly dues. where I'll be in 2 weeks, it's included in the site rental.
So why pay for gas?
If I were paying for it, I'd do the math and bookmark the site. - TakingThe5thExplorerKeep in mind that you may need to watch your electric usage in some circumstances. If you have 30 amp service, if it’s over 100 degrees and your air conditioners are maxed out, if your morning routine includes running things like a toaster, hair dryer, electric coffee pot, microwave, etc.- then you might want to consider running on propane only and turning it off at night. It almost goes without saying unless you don’t say it and it goes.

guive it z try And see what happens. - old_guyExplorerI have a 10 gallon water heater and I use the electric side of it most of the time. esp if it is just DW and myself. if we bring the kids and grandkids then we use the propane along with the electric. DW and I have plenty of hot water with just the electric. in a CG, I use more hot water than DW does, since I like long hot showers and we still don't runout of hot water
- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIAtwood has a recovery rate of:
Electric Only----roughly 6 gal/hr initial fill cold
Propane Only-----roughly 10 gal/hr initial fill cold
BOTH.............roughly 16 gal/hr initial fill cold
Suburban has similar recovery rates even with a 2000btu larger propane burner - AllegroDNomad

We only use the AC element when hooked up to shore power. Never have a problem running out of hot water for just the two of us.
This ^^^^ is us. - ktmrfsExplorer IIyes we/you can do both or either. Our routine is to turn off the WH when we go to bed. In the morning water is still warm enough to wash hands etc. When I get up and turn on the stove for the coffee water, I turn on both gas and electric if electric is available. by the time we have coffee water is hot enough for showers. Once done with showers or the water is heated, (15 minutes or less) then I switch to electric.
When we are packing for a trip my standard proceedure is to fill with fresh water, turn on the water pump, turn on the gas WH and wait for it to fire, let it heat the water. Also turn on the furnace if we will be using it. That way I KNOW they all work BEFORE we leave!! Usually leave the trailer hooked up the night before we leave. While finishing packing turn on the WH again, let it warm up the water. That way we have warm water for any stops and when we get to the end of day stopping spot. - 2112Explorer IIOur routine is I turn both on before wife gets in the shower. When she is out I turn off the electric so her hair drier doesn't trip the breaker. I'll switch back to only electric once she is finished.
- DirtpigExplorerElectric when plugged in as it will cost less. Propane usage is more expensive then the electricity used. If u find yourself running out of hot water, or you insist on having back to back showers, then having both on simultaneously will heat the water faster.
