MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico will ban the sale of gasoline oxygenated with ethanol beginning in late October in three major urban centers as part of a push to combat the worst pollution in over a decade due to high concentrations of ozone in the atmosphere, government officials say.

While Mexico opened to the door to such imports in April (2017), such a blend of ethanol and gasoline is not yet present in the Mexican market. State oil company Pemex says it neither produces nor imports gasoline oxygenated with ethanol.

However, the new rule anticipates any such imports in future as Mexico opens up its long-shuttered energy sector. In May, the government said that air quality levels in Mexico City and its surrounding areas were the worst in 14 years.

A ban in key metropolitan areas could hinder the development of the potential market, which would concern U.S. traders.

Mexicoโ€™s energy regulator CRE expects a new norm on oil quality standards, NOM-016-CRE-2016, to be published next week in the official gazette. It will come into effect in late October, and is a periodic review replacing previous norms.

There were no immediate details on any other fuel norm changes in the pipeline.

The new standard establishes quality parameters for gasoline, liquid gas, diesel and jet fuel, for a period of up to five years.

The ban on the sale of gasoline oxygenated with ethanol covers Mexico City and a host of surrounding municipalities in the State of Mexico, as well as Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state and Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo Leon.

โ€œDue to altitude and heavy traffic, it was decided that the most appropriate measure at this time was to prohibit the sale and marketing of gasoline oxygenated with ethanol because it is a precursor of ozone and we have a contamination problem,โ€ a CRE official said, asking not to be named in line with policy.

Alabama, may be a common-sense state. How many of those are in the group of 50. Time will pass, then someone will discover 15% alcohol positively makes it easier to fail state emissions testing and certification.

Go to Brasil, sometime. Rio de Janiero or Sao Paulo. Downtown. Stand on a corner and breathe deep. Even at it's worst Los Angeles smog never made my gag and gasp for air.

Love it. Mexico's government is one of the most corrupt in the world and only death and imminent heath hazards forces them to toe the line on pollution in Mexico City. And THEY are the ones who offer accuracy about gasohol.

I'll say it again. Where is the mandate that forces industry to purchase sugar beets first? Where is the offer to sell Mexico corn at gasohol prices if food prices on a retail level there decrease? Keeping Mexicans at home...

This fraud makes the Teapot Dome Scandal pale in comparison. Dollar per quart gasohol that pollutes is going to help destroy the RV industry. It's destroying the economy down here and take a guess where economic refugees are headed...

Aviation fuel 90 low lead is about the only place I know of that alcohol free gasoline can be had.

There are over 400 gas stations in Alabama that sell 100% gasoline. 15 in my city. Now this list may not be up-to-date, but I see signs for this stuff all the time as it is a marketing point around here.

Ethanol does not make for a clean fuel (post combustion), nor does it have an equivilant BTU energy content of gasoline, while there is a overall net GAIN in pollution due to ethanolโ€™s production...

The effect of burning Ethanol produces clouds of formaldehyde over our cities that can be seen only in infra red (out of sight, out of mind..).

Of course, none of this really matters...What does really matter with ethanol, water resource management, and other NIMBY (e.g. power distribution demand) initiatives is the โ€˜feel good intentโ€™ provided by an unreasoned, joggurnaut of politically-centric mandates...

Per an old axiom, โ€œWhat will one do once they find out that everything they know is a lieโ€??

Aviation fuel 90 low lead is about the only place I know of that alcohol free gasoline can be had. Mexico said it is planning to require all of it's gasoline to be essentially sulfur fee โค๏ธ ppm. CERO AZUFRE

And the electricity to recharge the batteries comes from a fossil fuel generating plant.

And good luck with a electric tow vehicle.
Hydrogen is even worse. From Wikipedia:

"There are four main sources for the commercial production of hydrogen: natural gas, oil, coal, and electrolysis; which account for 48%, 30% 18% and 4% of the worldโ€™s hydrogen production respectively."

How does one buy fuel without ethanol, all the pumps here in Vegas have mandatory ethanol requirements as well many other cities and states.

Lots of places around here sell "100% gasoline".

Electrical storage is the problem. Approximately seven hundred million three hundred watt panels could drastically reduce hydrocarbon generation demand but it's the storage that is vexing. If you have ever seen Jacques Cousteau's kid's (Phillipe) yacht the halycion, he uses vertical turbine power coupled to prop shafts to move the boat.

I wrote a letter to Dianne Feinstein about "The Corn Conspiracy" in which I asked her why use-less-for-any-other-reason SUGAR BEETS have not been mandated FIRST into the ethanol producing program. Beets are less intensive to grow, yield far more sugar than any other plant except cane per pound. She answered the letter with a boilerplate response.

Sell the corn as fuel to a hungry world. It is an economic weapon.

As it is I relegate corn as a revenue generating instrument. Like some states place red light cameras at intersections then without warning raise the cost of fines then reduce amber light burn time from 5 seconds to four seconds.

Revenue generating instruments that fund PACs are legislative Holy Grail territory. The entire conspiracy is worthy of a full on congressional investigation but that would be like Burglars participate in the sentencing phase of fellow burglars...

Enough harping on my part. Younger members of this forum will feel it's impact. Some of whom use Bob Marley's Don't Worry Be Happy, as a theme song. I won't be around to see their 401K reveal itself as a 4.01K

Good luck with that. Really hard to find pumps that don't have it included.

Yes, and even if you walk everywhere, as a taxpayer you still get to support the scam.

Mexico City has mandatory yearly emissions certifications, decals and no license plates without passing the certification. They also need hyperclean gasoline with 0 ppm sulfur not 30 ppm sulfur like it is now including in the USA.

In my neck of the woods we have these things on cars called emision controls aka catalytic converters that clean up exhaust somewhat..
Why not get rid of old dirty vehicles and get modern ones?
