Is there a such gen that is quiet AND features auto-start?

I've been researching to see if a generator with the following features exist:

- At least 3000w, ideally higher
- As quiet as possible
- Feed gas (not LP or diesel)
- Ability to auto-start based on battery level (when it dips to below 50%)

I realize Honda's EU series offer remote-start feature, but I would feel far more comfortable if the generator kicks in automatically when I'm not around.

Appreciate your feedback in advance!
  • I have the Onan Marquis Platinum, 5.5kw, model 5.5HGJAA. It is the quietest generator I've heard. Its easy to forget its running.
As you've already seen, there are several options for the auto-start. I use a Xantrex inverter/charger that offers that option.
  • Nice - looks like what Magnum device will work nicely, it even supports both Honda EU3000 and EU7000 according to their documentation...

    Thanks!
  • When you find an electric start generator that you want, just add a Magnum stand alone, auto start to it.

  • Most auto-start systems use the inverter to trigger the auto start, not the generator. The inverter is on, delivering the power to the loads, it uses the battery power down to a preset level, it triggers auto-start, the generator starts running and supplies power to the loads via an auto-transfer switch (usually built into the inverter) and the inverter starts charging the batteries back up. All the generator has to do is have electric start (and automatic choke if it's gas powered).

  • They have not made the Honda RV models for years now, and they are not at all quiet.
Really, an Onan micro quiet fills the bill.

P.S. a friend has a number of the Honda EV6010 6500 watt RV gensets for sale, but he had to have 6 of them to keep 4 running at all times. Now he switched to Onan (and solar).
  • 4,500 or 6,500 watt Honda gas RV generator. Water cooled! Yes start from a control panel. Expensive? Sure! But probably cost about what a Onan will run too.

Mayberrys.com can sell all the other Honda generators, and probably can order one, or at least give you a price on one.

As for auto start, Trace inverters have the ability to control any generator that has a control panel. I don't know that type of controller you have, or converter, or inverter, but if it is Trace, Outback, or a few other brands, they can have a remote control panel with programmable auto start based on input DC voltage, some even have a time clock to prevent it from starting at programmed times, such as midnight.

    Good luck!
