just discovered a new (to me) parasite DC draw

Getting ready for an upcoming trip that will include a little boondocking and I just discovered that there are two switches on my Dometic fridge, one of which is a "climate control" switch that apparently keeps the fridge from sweating. Haven't done an experiment yet to see how much it draws but it might explain why, on my first boondocking trip last fall, my batt bank went down way faster than I thought it would in spite of changing all bulbs to led's, etc. Will try tomorrow to see what my Trimetric shows as a batt drain with and without the switch on. Forgot what the second switch is, but it has been off ever since I bought the fiver so that's not an issue, but the climate switch has been on forever.

Oops, didn't see the decimal point.

took off shorepower, draw was .4A according to the Trimetric. Good info to know.

Where are these switches located that you are referring to?

My humidity control switch is located in the top of the door jamb of the refrigerator. Open the refrigerator door, bend down slightly, and look up into jamb.

On mine, it is on the freezer jamb. 5.5A, that'll run a slew of led's and, I think, my led tv.
  • Dang manuals.......

    Climate control Heater & Switch

    Function
During the summer months of high temperatures and humidity, the metal frame between the freezer and fresh food compartments may have water droplets forming. The number of water droplets will increase if the vehicle isn’t air conditioned during these months. Some refrigerators come standard with a 12 volt (DC) climate control that will evaporate the water droplets when they form. To have the climate control on, you position the switch (normally located beneath the top decoration panel that houses the control panel) to ON. The approximate amp draw is less than .5 (1/2) amp.
    Note:
The climate control will draw 12 volt DC power continuously when in the ON position on certain models. It should be turned OFF when a charging source is not available or unit is in storage.

  • I pulled the wires off and insulated accordingly. We had never intentionally used the switch, and have never missed it's function having it disconnected.
  • Yeah, that does draw some significant current. Luckily during our walkthrough, the technician drove the point home that it was a real battery drainer and best to use that fridge function when on shorepower. That I know of, we have never had a reason to use it thus far, but anytime our battery bank does not perform up to it's usual standards, it's one of the first things I check.
