Kwikee Steps - Repair or Replace Steps?

I have a 2001 motorhome with Kwikee Steps series 32. The steps are needing a new motor. I removed the steps from the motorhome. Very heavy steps. I am wondering if I should replace the steps entirely new or replace only the motor that is out? My steps are slightly rusty, but only appears to be surface rust. I wonder if new steps are any less in weight? Repair or Replace? New motor is around $150 range, new steps around $375 range.
  • I bought a new motor from Rock Auto for 29.95( it was a discounted item. I did have to use the old gear in the new motor but it works perfectly. It was a power window set up.

Some of those motors can be replaced with Ford power window motors. That gets the cost down into the $50 range. Of course everything else needs to be good or repairable/repaired. It's been discussed here, so a search should turn it up.
Gearcase can be salvaged with a kit from the HELP rack at the auto supply. If the motor is round, pretty easy to clean up and get running. The square-form ones seem quite a little trickier.

EDIT: Chris posted his gearbox repair link while I was typing. That HELP 74410 is the kit I was referring to. I first learned about this at an auto supply that pressed a lot of wheel bearings. Guys would get balls from junk bearings and use them as the "Kit."
  • I would try to replace just the motor. A bit of sanding and or Steel wool, fresh paint, finish with a good lubrication.

  • New steps would include new electronics and you may have an old step with a recall. At 15 yrs old the bolts along the sides could be weak. Not my money but I have had to replace the control electronic and the motor and a bolt along one side on my 08.
  • From what I've read on the forum you can buy that motor for a lot less other then OEM, might make a difference. I'm on my second set. Don't ask. lol Try a search, lots of stuff.
