MegaWatt charger box ideas.

So the MegaWatt I purchased along with the other parts and TIMER I'm using to make a portable charger. Anyone have a good idea on what to use as a box to mount everything into? First I was going to mount everything down to some aluminum or plastic cutting board material then I thought it would be nice to have a carry handle then I started thinking again and thought a box or better yet a box that the top and sides removed when I wanted to use it. Most the time I will be using the charger at home but it would be nice to take it along on extended dry camping trips so protecting the parts and pieces would make transportation easier.
  • Meh, mine is just going to get installed somewhere in the storage area in the front of my Travel trailer, under the bed.
  • I have no idea how large the MegaWatt is, but how about an Army ammo can? You'd have to drill some ventilation holes in it, but they're only about $7, has a handle on the top and the lid opens to slide everything in and then fasten it down.

  • CAREFUL!
You are screwing with my patent pending BORG design.

Yeah I did send an email to T Greenburg and Associates the same firm I hired to represent me in case the pulse charger design ever became valid. This is a pie-in-the-sky hope that someone will have to purchase the concept. Fat chance.

Anyway to make myself useful here.

You need to find a surplus store, an electronics salvage yard, whatever, to root through their rejects and find a hugely ventilated case. Strip the chassis. Many times the end plates are garbage with weird holes. Sheet metal and rivet over top to get a fresh slate. Look on eBay for 3/4" compression plastic strain reliefs. About right for charger cables and power cord.

I paid strict attention to what Salvo wrote and the hair on the back of my neck stood up on end. Keep the pot leads away from AC radiation sources. I am going to do as I wrote before and use shielded twin 20 gauge pairs. The pots are metal not plastic so the shells will see earth ground through the chassis. The BORG is getting more AC line suppression than an ICBM silo.
  • I used a length of 6" x 6" aluminum box to mount some variacs. Easy to construct with a piece of box, only the ends need to be filled for a six sided box.
