- j-dExplorer IIWe have an OP here who built a 460 Ford up to 500+ inches, mid 500's if I remember, and it's still mild enough to be VERY useful in his Class A.
We have another, who replaced his 454 Chevy with a 502 GM Crate Motor.
I just wish our V10 was a V12. Wait, no I don't; I'd never be able to get to the house from the cockpit...
Drove a 1930's Cadillac with a V16. "Only" 452 inches and probably not all that much HP, but the thing was all torque. My friend discovered it in a barn, retired from launching gliders at a rural airfield. Zero to 100 from a dead stop in high gear (third) pulling the glider behind. No slack in the cable because the driver didn't shift. - tatestExplorer IINot really from GM (built with aftermarket performance parts, including the block, which are loosely modeled on the Chevy big block).
Not particularly new, as 700-800 HP normally-aspirated "street" builds of Ford, Mopar and GM big blocks have been around for almost 40 years. Can-Am racers were getting that kind of power from 7-liter builds, running 12 and 24 hour endurance races. Sprint Cup engines reached 850 HP from just 5.7 liters before Nascar started working on power reductions.
I'm seeing 582's sold assembled at $9000 to $16,000 at this level of tune.
A 800 HP probably would not be so useful as a motorhome powerplant, but a 400 HP tune of a 572-582 big block could be interesting, as it would be about the same level of tune as 340-350 HP from the 8.1 Vortec.
GM is still selling the 572 crate motor, rated for 750+ at 6200 rpm. - WILDEBILL308Explorer II

Planning on going racing? That is a motor built by Mike Petralia of Hardcore Horsepower and sold by Summit Racing.
You too can own one for $1,827.57 but I wouldn't recommend it for regular street use and certainly not for RVing.
Are you sure of that price? A new Chevy 8.1 is 7 Grand, and there is also an 8.9 (Psl) built on the same block.
This one is bigger, Badder (9.sometihng) and .. Well. Custom-er
I think the actual price is over$9,000.00
Still cheaper than the Banks custom built that start at $30,895.

$1827 would be a bargain for that motor! I'd order one today for my '55 Nomad! - wa8yxmExplorer III

- BipeflierExplorerYeah, and you likely get to rebuild it every 10k miles or so!

That would be fun at the midnight motor home drags but with peak torque at 4,200 rpm not very practical for our purposes. I'm thinking I could build a badass racing lawnmower though.;)
I don't know about that. The peak torque for the Ford V10 is not all that far different, and it seems to work out pretty well in motorhomes. I hear more complaints from owners not liking the engine running at higher RPMs than reports of the engine not liking it.
The bigger problem here would likely be longevity: how long can the motor in the link sustain high power output continually without trouble (and before needing rebuilding)? It's rather different to design an engine for high instantaneous power output when compared with designing one for high continuous power output; cooling, in particular, is far more of a concern in the latter case. - Hmmmm, says it drinks pump gas..... and 11:1!
I should stuff one of those into my 81 Cutlass! That would wake it up.
Nice engine. :B
Could really roast some rubber with that baby!
