New HDHomeRun TV tuner feature - very cool

Just saw a post on Lon TV YouTube channel about a new feature in HDHomeRun (also Plex DVR). They are just rolling it out. In addition to the local channels you provide with your antenna, they have added a bunch of popular cable channels, which they pull from the internet. Right now it is in demo mode, where you can watch a couple of minutes of the channel before it hits you up for the package. I believe he said it runs $34 a month. It has the ESPN channels and the History channel, and a bunch more. Every football season, I get Sling TV for the NFL and college ball. This is cheaper, and I can DVR and commercial strip it. Check it out. CLICK HERE
  • The point of this post is that I will have a way to watch the shows I enjoy on cable networks without the STINKIN' commercials. Boy, was I disappointed when cable first came to town. I thought that I could pay up front and watch stuff without commercials. I was wrong. Anyway, back to the point. With HDHomeRun (a network attached tuner and software) and MCEBuddy (a Windows program), I record what I want to see on my media PC. When it's done, MCEBuddy strips out the commercials and transcodes the video into the format I choose. So I can watch recorded programs on any device I have over my home network. With football, I just start watching from the beginning after the game has been on for about an hour. I skip forward through the commercials, and finish about the same time as the game.
  • this is just a new slant on an OLD topic

    walmart / amazon / ebay
$30 OTA digital PVR, records to memory stick or USB drive drive
one tuner, with OTA GUIDE, set it to record your programs

want to record (2) programs at the same time 'buy' (2) of them

AV and HDMI output, records IN HiDef, 1080 or 720, which ever stream the station is broadcasting

files average 6GB per hour of recording
they directly record the HD broadcast stream, NO down conversion
plays them back any time you want
save them to your PC or backup drive for long term storage/archive
watch them on your PC, with your favorite video player
    NO DRM

this over the air 'ONLY' no cable recording, no Satellite recording
    don't need a $1000 box or even a $300 box

Good lord, $1200? I don't think so- I can use a Raspberry Pi system for under $100, but my main computer is a Lenovo server, under $400, quiet, low energy consumption. I haven't turned it off in over a year, just reboot for new kernels.

Guess we are talking OTA in this thread... Agree you can do all that stuff with PC/Pi... I played with adding a OTA tuner and PC... Not anything I wanted to mess with although I have the tech abilities to do it. But PC's etc are not even close to those Magnavox's. BTW when I got mine they were <> $300. The one I linked is a 2 tuner device... so that is not too bad.

Put the dates, programs you want in and it runs a bit like a VCR of yesteryear but there is a display of what you recorded which is entered when you are setting up the programing.

The 3 I have cost <>$1000... All single tuners.. No cable... Save $75/mo... You do the math over the 10 years I have had them.

  • Those are pretty cool but there is no recording that can be done unless you use a PC or one of the tivo things.

I went with the Magnavox Tv/cable recorders about 10 years ago. I have 3 of which no problems have ever been encountered. They do not have program guides so you have to set them up for what you want to record.. I set them up to record programs we like and they record the weekly/daily programs. They run every day.

Now they have a dual tuner which means you can record 2 OTA programs at the same time.. Someday I might get one but they are double the cost of the early models.

This is the current model.. Expensive, yes. But if you cut the cable it will pay for itself in about 1 year, depending on what your cable needs are. Here is Sac we get about 40 digital channels.
