Hello! I have a 1998 Winnebago Chieftain 36WL Diesel Class A. I have no coach power. It worked one day then nothing. I checked my batteries, no voltage. I plug in with shore power, nothing. I disconnected my inverter/converter to install a Dinette. How do I hook up the inverter/converter, not sure what it is. It has a Red and White wire going to my battery. I consider myself mechanically inclined (20 years in the Air Force as a mechanic) but I am stumped. What can I check? What explains the no shore power? If it is the battery disconnect switch, how can I check it? Sorry for the questions..just providing plenty of symptoms :) Thanks so much! MarkOne more thing..If the battery disconnect switch fails, will it eventually drain the coach batteries?Please help, I really don't want to take it to a dealer!Once I fix it, I will immediately post what the problem was :)

The inverter/converter is a dual use device.When in converter mode, it converts "shore power" to 12Volts DC and charges the battery.When in inverter mode it makes 120Volts AC.If you are measuring zero Volts at your batteries, you have destroyed them and you will need to replace them.You will need to connect the I/C to the battery. Before doing so, measure the output of the converter to determine the correct polarization.

First of all, if shore power is plugged in, you should have 120v ac power at all the wall plugs. If you don't then the inv/converter is not getting any power either, and is a real good reason for the batteries being stone dead.
So, fix that first,...its either the main breaker, or a bad connection in the main power cord, or in the ac breaker distribution panel. After getting the ac all working, then connect the inv/converter up properly and read the voltage at the batteries, should be 13.8 to 14.4. If they won't start charging, use a separate charger, w/ the dead batts connected to a known charged battery.

The red wire goes on the battery pos post and the white goes on the neg post.

Plug in shore power and "enable" the charger portion of the inverter/charger. You should now be getting at least 13.6v at the battery, maybe even 14.4.
