Noisey Refrigerator

Just bought a new TT with a Dometic refrigerator. I had it parked in front of our house for several days with the shore power hooked up and the refrig on. DW calls me at work and says the refrig is making a horrific noise. She turned it off and the noise continued for nearly 5 minutes. She recorded it on her phone and it sounds like a really loud fan. If this came on in the middle of the night, you'd jump out of your bunk!
I took it to our dealer and it never made a sound. From what I have read online, these Dometic refrigerators have been known to have loud fans and no reference to what the fix might be. As loud as this is, it couldn't be a normal condition. Has anyone else had a this?

IF the fridge is installed in a slide out it will (SHOULD) have fan(s) as they are needed to help the required draft used to remove heat from cooling unit.

Dometic t-stat that controls the fan(s) closes at 150*F condenser fin temp turning fan(s) on and then opens when condenser fin temp reaches 122*F turning fan(s) off. (When DW turned fridge off condenser fins were still hot so fans ran until cooled down below t-stat set point)

Does your Fridge Model No. have an 'X' in it?........factory installed fans
No 'X' in model no. then dealer installed fans due to need for improved draft

As with most OEM items the fans are on the low end of quality and use bushings vs bearings......12V DC Computer ball bearing fans are must better.
Problem is accessing the fans.......typically fridge has to be pulled out of cabinet enough to reach fans (mid-center above absorber tubes----large slanted tubing)

    Noisy rv fridge....bad fans

Thanks for the simple, understandable description of what's going on. I have since done a lot of reading and this is a common complaint. It's a brand new trailer that has been used only once on a 2 day outting. It's still under warranty and I hate to accept "It's a normal condition" explanation for a poorly designed system that uses cheap components. Well, next week back to the dealer and we'll see what happens. Btw, my model does have an "X" in it.

Thanks for the input. The refrig is in a slide out so I'm sure it has the fan. I would be very surprised (and unhappy) if this is a normal condition. Apparently it's very loud. I hope the dealer can do something about it.

Dealer is going to have to run fridge long enough with outside air temp high enough to cause t-stat that controls fans to come on.

OR they can jumper power to fans at the t-stat which is accessible via the upper side vent cover.
And they wouldn't even have to turn fridge on.

  • Some gas absorption fridges are equipped with an optional cooling fan, some aren't. My current Dometic DM2652 doesn't have one nor does it seem to need it but I've owned Norcolds in the past that were equipped with a fan. These are thermostatically controlled fans and will turn on/off as needed and although I'd be sure that's what you're hearing if you feel it's excessively noisy then have your dealer take a look, 'though obviously he needs to run it for a long enough period of time and under conditions that would trigger the fan to come on. As for "loud" I suppose that's in the eye of the beholder ... personally it's never bothered me as it's always been just loud enough to ascertain when it's running and when it isn't. Possibly you have a fan with a bad bearing but obviously your dealer can only determine that if the fan actually comes on.
