Onan 2500 LP 2.5 HGJBB Spec A

Okay, here is what I found. After gaining access to the coil I adjusted to ensure the spacing was correct and removed the new spark plug. I then reattached the boot to the plug and grounded it to the engine. I then spun the flywheel by hand several times and there was no spark. I removed the coil and tested for residence with an ohm meter. When I placed one probe on the spark plug wire and the other to the core my reading was 18.2K Ohm specifications called for 8.3K Ohm. So it would appear I have to much resistance.

Time to eat the bullet and buy the $250 coil. Which surely must be worth the cost because it must be made of platinum and I can melt it down to get my money back when the new one fails. ??

Thank you all for this great info. I was always reluctant took work on the camper in case I got in over my head. I’m almost off duty and plan on going right home to finally fix the darn thing. That said, I’m tempted to fix this generator and then sell it. Then use that money to buy a nice quiet portable Honda. The current generator is darn loud and I would not mind goin outside to start one.

You will want to provide them with the model number and serial number of your genset. Preferably, take and post a picture of your unit's data plate.

They will direct you to the service manual for your unit, which will have diagnostic procedures, as well as help you diagnose your problem.

Make sure the coil gap between the magnet on the fly wheel and the coil is right and that nothing is blocking it. Had one once that had some metal shavings stuck to the magnet. I cleaned the magnet off and every thing worked fine.

Check eBay for cheap coil knock-offs. I have a Honda GX120 motor on a power washer that had a faulty coil. Got the coil on eBay for $8 I think. Worked fine.

If your genny has a low oil cut-out, it may be faulty. (check oil first) You can bypass the switch by simply unplugging it. The low oil switch will kill spark if it is faulty.

The on/off switch may have failed. Check that too.

Thanks Kpack! The part number is A043K694, for the ignition coil. The only documentation that I have for this generator is the Install manual and the Operator Manual. Between the two it only gives the coil gap spec.

On a side note, the ignition coil for this unit is a $250 coil. Does anyone know why this is so expensive?

Look in your service manual about the coil or magneto. If you don’t have a service manual we’ll find you one.

Thanks for the response! I got a new plug and grounded it with the cap on and I’m still not able to get spark. The old plug looked to be in good condition.
