Onan 3.6 KYFA LP Generator won't stay running

Hi Everybody,

I have a 2006 Carriage with an Onan 3.6 LP generator installed. It has a remote starter and the starter on the unit. I had my rig at my mountain property for about 4 years and visited frequently. It always started and ran continuously for the weekend. I had it attached to a 100lb LP tank, with regulator, it ran on that for about 2 yrs.

Last summer we went up and it started as usual at about 9 PM. Ran fine as always, then around 4 AM, it just shut off. It turned over and restarted, but immediately shut down. Waited til daylight and checked oil, it was fine. I just brought it home and tried it here, thinking that maybe the altitude was an issue, the property is at 5000' and we live in the valley, at about 100'. Same deal, turns over, starts, but shuts down. If I hold the starter, it will continue to run.

Any suggestions? I was told it might be the low oil sensor switch. I ask a local repair guy and he somewhat blew that idea off and wanted to know what the code of blinking lights might be. (can't anyone list potential problems without using a computer or codes)

I can repair anything if I can get directions and/or photos. I have a hard time letting a tech spend 3 hours diagnosing an unknown problem, only to come back to what I mentioned in the beginning. I know that is a little unfair and they are out to make money, but has anybody had the same issues and been able to repair on their own.

I am open to any suggestions and/or directions. Thanks
  • Yes you can change the oil and filter and spark plug. Doesn't have an oil filter just a gas filter. Nothing dangerous about doing the routine service. That model may have a low oil level sensor causing a false shutdown. Onan stopped using them because of the problems they caused. Look for a wire under the engine going to the oil pan.

The other problem could be loss of AC voltage. If you don't have the service manual. Go to Smokstak Onan section. Post an email address and you will get one. Supply full model and serial number
  • Mr Fischer, I turned it over for about 15 seconds, ran the entire time, then shut down. 3 flashes. According to the panel 3 flashes : service required. It has 271 hours. Most likely 75 hours since last oil change. Never changed spark plug or air filter.

Can I service: oil, filter, plug and reset?

    Thanks
  • from my manual:
GENSET RUNS BUT STOPS WHEN SWITCH IS RELEASED – NO FAULT CODE
WARNING Some genset service procedures present hazards that can result in severe personal injury
or death. Only trained and experienced persons with knowledge of fuels, electricity, and machinery
hazards should perform genset service. See Safety Precautions.
Logic: Fault codes are based on time lapse between events
Possible Cause: Not holding start switch long enough to cause fault
    Diagnosis and Repair:
    1. Check and record last fault code.
    2. Start genset and hold switch until control shuts down and displays fault code (approximately 30 seconds):
troubleshoot fault code and reference last fault code recorded above if necessary.
