Onan 5500 Diesel Generator starting

I have a 5500 diesel generator that has set for about 4 months without being started. Went to crank up today and it just will not start. It had ran perfect before. Can I use starter fluid without causing harm? Thanks

The model of my Diesel Onan generator is a HDKBA I put a new fuel filter in today and it still will not crank. Gas gauge now says full but I do not think gauges are working as all are pegged to Right. Will buy some fuel and put in see how that works. Thanks

What is the model no. of your genset? Is it an HDKBA or B.?
The official word from ONAN and Kubota (engine manufacturer) on use of starting fluids is ABSOLUTELY NEVER! You can easily break piston ring lands with starting fluids. If your set cranks over, but will not start, you need to find and correct problem. As OP posted; check fuel level in tank, then maybe fuel filter and fuel pump. four months is not a very long time to set with diesel fuel. Any chance critters have gotten in set and chewed on some wiring? We see this a lot at my shop.
also, check for fault codes stored in control.
Are you getting any smoke (white or grey) from tailpipe when attempting to start? if so, then you are getting some fuel delivery, but perhaps glow plug system not working.

Depends on wether it has glow plugs or a grid heater. If it has a grid heater, NO!. I would first check to see if the you have at least a 1/2 tank of fuel, then check the fuel filter and see if it is full of fuel.

I wouldn't use starter fluid. First thing to check is if you have more than 1/4 tank of diesel fuel in the coach. If that is ok, then change the fuel filter on the genny. It is pretty simple to do and a good chance that's the problem. Mine has sat several times for that long with no problem.
