Onan Emerald III Genset Problems
Greetings,
This is in reference to my Onan Emerald III Model - 6.5NHEFA26101E.
History: This is in a 1990 Airex motorhome.
Two years ago, it would only run with start button held in start position. I removed the generator from the coach, took it to a “certified” Onan shop in Reno, NV. They said it was fixed and a tune-up was completed, about $ 400.
I re-installed the generator. It would not start and only “clicked” noise from the solenoid. Tried with MH running, just a slightly louder “click”.
Replaced the starter and solenoid, oil is full.
Ensured batteries were good. Checked battery voltage—at 12.92 , Checked voltage at solenoid at 12.60,
Checked voltage at starter at 12.38. Still just “clicks”.
I turned over the generator with an allen wrench. It is hard to turn on compression stroke. I removed the spark plugs—turned over easy, blew a little oil out while cranking.
Note: I disconnected the starter, clipped on my meter, and tried the start button. It still just “clicked” but sounded a bit different from when starter was connected. Reconnected the starter, hit the start button, it cranked great w/o the spark plugs.
Question: Is there a compression release mechanism on this unit?
Also, not sure if this had anything to do with this, but after I received it back from shop, I took off the covers and cleaned out the mouse houses, as the shop said they could of cleaned it, but would of charged a lot for this service. Was there anything that could have been affected to cause this?
I did read a blocked exhaust could cause this, but not too confident this is the cause.
Any ideas or suggestions on solving this problem? I do appreciate any insight!
I would take it to a shop, but am retired and would like to save that cost.
Thanks
