Onan generator fuel filter replaced with a fitting

I'm usually the last one to figure things like this out, but I thought I would pass it along anyway since it is a safety issue.

I acquired this 2007 Allegro last year. I have changed the generator oil, oil filter and air filter. It has 200 hours on it. The manual does not give instructions on changing the fuel filter as it says "must be performed by a qualified mechanic (authorized Onan dealer)". It suggests at 450 hours. This is probably just standard Lawyer text as I assume many of you have changed the fuel filter yourself?

It is not due, unless years count, but it has a very slight gas leak. It could be from the clamp area or it could be coming down from what I assume is the fuel filter attach ring which usually has an O-ring if it is like my tractor. The hose does not have a lot of play but probably enough to make a fresh clamp area.

Underneath there is the generator fuel pump and what appears to be another filter.

When looking for the filter part, I could not find it in the Onan diagrams as it has been replaced with just a fitting.

On Amazon, one reviewer referred to the original redundant filter as dangerous. I guess that is why mine is dripping gas. Maybe there had been a recall?

  • Replace all those worm drive clamps with correctly sized spring clamps while you're in there.
  • Fred: That filter is threaded in to to right angle fitting.
It was a common filter used on Ford carburetors in the '80s and '90s
Any NAPA parts store should stock it, there were a couple of different thread sizes, take in the old one. The clamp is not the right style it will leak and the clamp cuts into the hose. The hose could be cut a little shorter and a proper clamp used, would likely stop leak.

  • While at NAPA, get new ethanol resistant hose, 11 years is enough.
  • I have the 5500 Marquis mounted in a 2005 Fleetwood.I had the leak problem last year while on the road.We had stopped on side of road for lunch.Wife wanted to use microwave. No problem start Genny for whatever reason I tke a walk outside around MH and notice a drip in Gen. area.My investigation led me to the precise part the OP shoews in first pic.Found a authorized dealer in Reno,he told me there was a recall out on that part.To me it should have had a high priority, what would have happened if I would have set up for the night and had the Gen running for hours.Certainly a high fire hazard
  • With 200 hours on the generator it's obvious it didn't get much use. I would fix the fuel leak and wouldn't bother to replace the filters.
  • The leak is coming from the filter. The crimp is failing. I know because it happened to me. ONAN modified their system to remove the filter closest to the engine.
  • I "temporarily" fixed my leaking filter crimp with a gasoline resistant sealant.
  • fred42, I also have the stupid Onan Marque 7000 that I installed new in our fiver in 2004. Of course it had the notorious gas drip at the filter below the carb after some use. Saw on a forum that Onan had brought out a solid piece to replace the leaking fuel filter. Got the part number than stopped by a "certified Onan service" joint. They had the replacement part hanging on their display boards, picked one up and took it to the checkout counter. The guy tried in the worst way to talk me out of that purchase and replace with another potential leaky POS. Said "we never install that replacement part". Needless to say I was out the door with the replacement part and have had no drips since. As far as a recall, never saw or heard of one and I bought the genny from Rocky Mountain Onan so it was traceable. Other Onan problems, yes.
  • Thanks all for your suggestions, I will replace the hose and use proper clamps.

It was a Cummins Power Generation Product Support Bulletin: CPGF-S-00000198-0
Fuel Filter Replacement Procedure for models HGJAB, HGJAC, HGJAE, HGJAF

They changed both fuel filters to new part numbers. The lower one at the pump is replaced by filter 0149-2341-01. The upper one by the carb is replaced not with a filter but with a simple adapter fitting A029S253.

All I am doing is replacing the one by the carb with A029S253. My Cummins service center in Charlotte had it for $19. The lower filter by the pump was the same one that was leaking at the carb (0149-2629) but mine is not leaking there as far as I can tell and it appeared to be harder to work on.
