Onan Marquis 5500 Starts then stops when Load is added

New owner to a used RV Trailer. The Onan Marquis Gold 5500 didn't start. I increased the elevation setting and the generator started fine. My elevation was 3,500 feet. Later in the day, we needed to use the microwave. The generator turned on fine, but after 2 minutes with the load of the microwave, the generator stopped. I tried many times over again and the same problem remains. I can run the generator for 10 minutes no problem. Add the microwave and the generator stops within 2 minutes. Turn on the generator and add the microwave right away, 2 minutes the generator turns off.
1/2 a tank of fuel and the error code is 3 red lights....Any ideas?

  • Our did that and it was a clogged air filter. Try changing the filter.
  • Had similar problem. Had camped in very dusty area for 4 days. Talked to the factory rep at FMCA convention. He thought it sounded like a gas problem. He did show me the choke on the Onan. Had used it for 14 years and knew about the choke. Changed air filter and no problem. Every thing worked great. Old air filter did not look that bad.
  • I confirmed that the error code is 35. The manual states to take the generator into a service center....sounds expensive.
  • Is it running on both cylinders. They can run on one.
  • You need to get the complete fault code: Onan Fault Code Retrival

You might try turning off other hidden loads such as your refrigerator, hot water heater, and expecially the converter and see if the condition persists.
