Only one side of slide moving??

Having another problem with my slide.
This is an Arctic Fox truck camper.

I sheared the main drive pin a year and a half ago, found the problem and fixed it easily. It was accessible.

This time, one of the gears that moves the slide by pushing the toothed track along in either direction just stopped working. I can't see inside the box housing the gear so I don't know what's going on.

When you move the slide in or out, only one side of the slide moves.

I can manually push the lazy side of the slide in or out if I really give it a shove.

How do I go about fixing this?

The gearbox is completely inaccessible when the slide is out.

The gearbox is just about inaccessible when the slide is in. Very very hard to reach.

Ideas? Any experience with one side of a slide failing?

If it is the gear closest to the motor it's the shear pin in the gear

Sorry don't know how to access yours. In fact had to pay to get mine done.

Now I know how to do mine but Never seen yours. I'm in Davision MI where "Artic" is ... a good RV to have this week, though it is swiftly warming.
  • I have a Power Gear slide. Motor on one end.

There are 2 rack and pinion gears. The one closest to the motor is slipping.

Any tutorials out there that specifically talk about how to get at these gears in a Northwood or Arctic Fox truck camper? Or even Northwood trailer?

Lots of fear opening this up. Dealers are extremely long wait lists.
  • It's a Power Slide unit.

I am able to reach the whole thing from the access hole inside the unit and by reaching in through the slide seals under the slide.

But... I can't really tell what's wrong without taking everything apart.

I'm traveling full time currently. Scared to get the slide stuck out... Or create a dangerous situation where it'll move out while making a turn.

This is a terrible problem to have while traveling.

Ok this sounds like a POWER GEAR slide system or one like it

on my POWER gear I have a motor and transmission (Roughly centered under the slide) and off each side of the tranny is a round shaft with a 1/4" hole. a square shaft fits over that secured with a GRAD 8 BOLT, the bolt is long enough (2 or 2.5 inches) that you can not tighten the nut down you must washer it up (The NUT is Nylock by the way) This way only the SMOOTH part of the bolt takes stress.

The square shaft is in two telescoping parts, the other part goes over a ROUND shaft, with another quarter inch shear bolt

That shaft turns the gear via a Shear pin the pin in this case is one of 2 or 3 different sizes depending on your Slideout

    Problems I've had to date

I've sheared all 4 of the quarter inch bolts so many times I buy 'em by the dozen. also washers and nylock nuts.

I've sheared one of the roll pins (Shaft to gear) twice, though the 2nd time I think it was because the technician put in the wrong size pin. (he admitted it)

And I've broken one gear shaft (We turned it around and am still using it)

I have a spare shaft on order, Should be here Tuesday along with a couple other parts.. Then on WED it's off to the races.

How to tell what is broken.. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SEE GEAR AND SHAFT (At least the part that sticks out past the rail

If Transmission is turning (it is) and square shaft is not Bolt at Tranny
If square shaft but not gear shaft, Bolt at gear

IF gear shaft but not gear Pin in gear

NOTE; a broken shaft.. Well that looks like a sheardd bolt till you grab hold.

NOTE two: On some Power Gear the motor and tranny is on one end But the big slides it will always be in the middle
  • Oh wow. This repair doesn't sound fun... Thanks for the advice. I'll report back what I find and how the fix went.
  • Assuming rack and pinion drive, you've sheared the pin on the follower side. You need to cut open the bottom covering (assuming coroplast).
  • Sounds like it broke the shear pin (bolt) on that side.
Any chance there's some kind of opening on the bottom of the TC if you remove it from the truck? Maybe a panel that has to be unscrewed?
