Power Cord Problem

Has anyone ever had their RV power cord to get stuck inside the RV and not pull out? It happen to us yesterday here at home while winterizing the TT. We were glad it happen at home! There was no other way to access the power cord compartment other than removing the cover and having limited access through the small 4 inch opening. What a pain, I am glad my wife has small hands. I was very surprised that there was not another access to untangle the power cord. You could not go through the power distribution panel. The cord left the distribution panel and made a hard turn into its own enclosed area behing the booth. I have an access now, I made me an access panel through my booth storage compartment. It looks good and will be hidden under the booth. It will work fine if it ever happens again. The wife and I both just kept saying, "This would have been a much worse pain if it had happen while traveling".

  • I joined the detachable cord gan after one stuck cord fun time.

By the way, where do you get the cord that is soft as a baby's butt :R

I will take your word for it since my baby is 41 years old. :W
  • That would only happen once !!

But what would be the big deal anyway,....alls ya gotta do is fire up the genset
  • A detachable power cord is the way to go. The conversion kits from Marinco may or may not work. In some cases the original hop was cut too large and there will either be a gap you can't hide or the;s no material for the mounting screws to bite into. Buy the individual components and make a mounting board for the inlet. I used a piece of KIng Starboard because I had some laying around, but a piece of white cutting board from WalMart will work just as good. Mount it with some SS sheet metal screws and run a bead of silicone around the edge to stop water leaks.

  • I have had my power cord get stuck when trying to pull it out.
I now periodically spray the cord with silicone .
Also when returning the cord to the compartment or pulling it out ,twist the cord so that it curls inside the compartment and then unrolls when you try to pull it out. This works for me quite well.
The silicone makes a big difference in the ease of getting it in and out.
  • Yes I have had the cord get stuck. Cheap cord that was supplied. Could not bend it when cold.Got rid of it and installed a inlet on the side of camper and now have a good soft cord. SO is the type of covering on it and is as soft as a baby's behind. It bends so easiely and as such stores very well.
  • Hi,

I cut off the cord at about 2 feet and put on a standard 30 amp male RV plug. I made the rest into an extension cord.
  • Yes we have! Finally replaced the access door and that solved the problem. Those plastic teeth were wore out. We also put a 6" cable tie around the head so if it happens again down the road, we can remove the access cover and grab it with a pair of fishing hemostats.

One fix would be to add a power cord receptacle... Then you could worry about storing the shore power cable somewhere else haha... They have kits to replace the pull-out door with a permanent power cord receptacle.
