Quick Kwikee kuestion

Hi
I searched in these forums and on the net in general. I still have one question though.
I have the single step on my '02 Coachmen Class A. It is a simple one that does nothing but go in or out when the rocker is pressed. I left it out while it sat for six months in FL. It would not go in. I gave it a push and it went. Later it began to refuse to retract all of the way. It jerks in and out for the last couple of inches and never quite makes it in. If I push it it will go in and the dash light will go out. I flushed out the bearings with a solvent and then greased them all including the ones on the motor/gearbox (which I removed). I am on shore power right now and I have tried it with the engine running to be sure there is 12v. I straightened the linkages slightly also. As I understand it the motor stops when the controller senses an increase in draw showing that it has hit the end of its run. How can I tell if it is the controller, motor or gearbox that I need?ThanksRob
  • Before you start throwing parts (and money) at it, check the voltage at the motor; there may be a bad connection.
  • That is a good thing in this case. Helps narrow things down. Is it safe to assume that I have a weak motor or a broken gear? Can anyone recommend an aftermarket motor/gearbox combo to bolt on? Since the wires going to the switch are different gagues and colors than the ones going to the motor and the junction box for them id built into the wall I am guessing I can just cut the wires to the motor and splice on the new ones.
    Thanks.
  • There is no controller for your step- just the rocker switch and motor, along with some sort of circuit protection (fuse, self reset circuit breaker, etc.)
  • Hi
Thanks.I found grounds. They are good. Started with clean joints and used silicone first. Moves easily. I checked the troubleshooting manual suggested and found if was for different model. Mine only goes in or out with a rocker. No door switch,no ignition interface. I need manual # 589. Can.t find. Whatevever control module there is is built on behind permanently closed ply box! Sticker says model 28, motor stamped 26, gearbox 152320, motor has 151332 on gear section. This is a single step. Could it.be a van step? Looks like all pd the others in the posts. Any. Ideas where to go with this? Ps sorry for bad grammar. Working with phone.
  • All above suggestions are good, but in reality, these Kwikee steps are haunted from day one.
Makes no difference who you are or if you have the highest quality DP M/H, one day soon or later it will act up, not work right & you'll be frustrated dealing with it. Theres probably more rv owners had problems with them, than those that have not.
There probably could be a quality auto step produced, but by the time it is installed on a new RV, the retail price of the rv would jump $10,000.00 higher just because it would work properly.

  • Corrosion on the electrical connection especially the grounds (two) can cause strange behavior.
  • The problem with grease is it collects dirt.

Dirty grease is too stiff to properly lubricate the step.

Remove all of the grease and lubricate the step with dry silicone lube.
