Refrigerator Ice Maker Leaks

I have a Class A coach with a residential ice maker with the water & ice feature in the door. It is now leaking water very slowly but persistently. It runs down the front and eventually puddles on the floor. Not only that, ice suddenly stops coming out. The ice maker can't force it out. When we pull the ice tray, the ice inside is frozen together from water "spilled" or otherwise collecting in the bottom of the ice trough. Clean that out and it works fine for a while and then repeats itself. We have had it worked on by a local appliance repair service. Replaced the water valve in the refrigerator. No change. Replaced the ice maker itself. No change. This happens whether we are going down the road or sitting still. Motion or the lack of motion does not affect it at all.

Anyone had this problem? Solution???

Thanks very much.
  • Dons2346: It is a self defrosting, Maytag brand. I will explore the drain line. Great thought. Hadn't crossed my mind. I think you may be onto something here.

The ice maker is separate from the bottom freezer compartment. Is there a separate "on/off" switch for the ice maker other than the rocker switch that turns off the mechanism?

Thank you! FYI: Have been to Sioux Falls. Beautiful city!
  • Self-defrosting??? Did that expert repairman turn OFF the freezer??

My residential fridge/freezer in the B&M was leaking on the floor. Ice maker was clogging as well. Turned out to be a clogged drain for the self-defrost. It was frozen solid...that de-frosted water had to go somewhere.

If you can access behind the fridge, look underneath. There is a pan that captures the water that should be damp or wet. Check to see if it looks like it has had water in it recently. While you're at it. Run a vacuum under there...those dusted parts need air to breath.

You can also check for the drain hole in the back of the freezer, as well as the drain hose. Is either frozen solid?

I have another freezer, so I shut mine down for a manual defrost. Has worked fine since then.

Before going to such extremes, you may want to try a bit of hot water into the drain hole. Be very careful if you attempt to clear it with something like a cloths hanger (not recommended) poking a hole could cause a permanent leak.

Hope this is a simple solution that works for you.
  • Don't know what brand refer you have but there is a valve buried in the refer somewhere that is leaking. It might be in the rear or in the front down low.

Water comes from the supply line and depending on what is calling for water, either the ice maker or the spigot on the door, the correct solenoid on the valve opens and supplies water.

    Part is about 50 bucks.
