safe alert rv propane gas detector.

Newbie here with a question. We just purchased a 2006 Keystone Outback 29BHS. The day after bringing it home, the Safe Alert propane detector started giving an audible alarm and a yellow LED. The face of the unit lists a key: yellow-replace, green-on, red-alarm. It also has a replace date of Jan 2010. Am I correct that this simply indicates that the detector itself needs to be replaced? Also, is there a way to unplug/disconnect it until the replacement arrives so it won't drain my battery (or encourage my tinnitus)? Thanks.
  • As riven1950 said it would be a good idea to check those smoke/co detectors. Your rig is a 2006 and most likely they have outlived there useful life if they haven't been changed.

What is needed is a dual chamber detector that will detect CO and smoke from a slow smoldering fire such as may start in a R/V because of electrical fires and fast burning smokeless fires.

    After a lot of research.

    This is what I found.
    A Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-B
That seemed to be best suited for this kind of application.

They now can be bought at Home Depot, also At Amazon.

I suggest you read all the info and make your decision on this but I replaced the ones in my Class C with this one. They are rated for 7 years
and most are only rated for 5,If your RV is older than 5 years old and they haven't been changed they are most likely no good. Mine needed to be replaced so this was a good deal for me.

Just a reminder,a first line of defense is always the best. Check those smoke detectors and replace them if needed, all have a date on them and how long they are good for. If they don't, toss them.

While it is important to know all of your emergency exits it is also
important to be warned early, especially if you are older or have mobility issues or have small children.

I hope that this helps,It is better to be safe than sorry and it is a small price to pay for security and peace of mind.
  • Wow! Didn't expect responses so quickly. Looks like mine is hard wired, no fuse that I could find. I just unwired the battery until the new part arrives via Amazon.com. Thanks for the help.
  • You should have an owner's manual and packet of manufacturer information on everything from the awning to smoke detectors that should have come with the camper.shouldIt will recommend what you need to do. TIP: I have always put my manual and other info in a 3 ring binder with an Index. We have found it to be very useful, quick, and handi to get to.
  • Mine was hard wired to 12 volts. You can remove the unit, 2 screws I think, and then just disconnect wires till you get a new one. Then reverse procedure to install the new one. Good luck

PS: might want to check your fire alarm and co detector too!
  • "Am I correct that this simply indicates that the detector itself needs to be replaced?" Yes.
Remove the detector and unplug the wires. You may also be able to pull a 12v fuse, but that may affect other items on the circuit.
