solar panels working?

Hellon I have a solar panel on my hauler and was wondering how to test it is actually working.the wires run from panel down the closet area where water heater and fridge exhaust at.however I don't see the wires running after that?do they go to converter?straight to batteries?
  • You see installs where they run down the fridge vent, put the controller in the fridge compartment, then use the battery wires powering the fridge as charging leads. Not uncommon, but not ideal since the fridge will see a little higher voltage that way, and the disconnect switch also disconnects solar charging in this configuration. Not huge problems just not ideal.

If it is a panel without a controller it can possibly be a bit more of an issue, since flipping the battery disconnect switch with the fridge controller powered up could expose the fridge to high DC voltage. That all depends on the controller draw vs solar output. If the fridge controller board kept the voltage out of the solar panel pulled down, then again, no big deal.

  • The solar wires don't have to go to the batteries,.in fact most probably don't. They can go directly, or thru any large enuff wires that go to the 12v distribution panel.

But if the panel is 80 watts or more, wouldn't it go thru a controller first ?
  • Not it's not unusual for systems without too many solar watts. For a large system it works better to continue the wires all the way back to the batteries.

Yes do you know how many watts your solar panels are?

  • by small system do you mean the panels?will back feeding the fridge hurt it or cause panel not to work properly?
  • Some installers cheat and back feed the 12v fridge power wires. Is it a small system by chance?

  • Ok,gonna be a day or two before I can get up to trailer its in storage.I do know there is no small wires going to the batteries but the wires for the electrfic tongue jack.
  • REVERSE ENGINEERING.

Get a volt meter you HAVE GOT TO use one to find out what's what...

Go to the battery. Do you see any suspiciously small wires? Note them.

Check the voltage at the battery. If the rig has been sitting in the sun for days, the battery voltage will be above 13.0 volts. If not, report back on the forum and help will be posted in reply.
