Does anyone know of an dc to ac inverter that has a transfer switch and does NOT contain a charger ?My tiny (xantrex RS400) inverter stopped functioning and its no longer available so I'm looking for a replacement with similar functionality.I need less than 1500w, mostly to run a Flat Panel TV, I dont need another charger (or converter/inverter/charger combo unit) all i really need is an inverter, with a built in transfer switch. Pure sine wave isn't necessarily required since the TV already has its own power supply in it & no other device that i would run is either sensitive enough nor w/out its own power supply such that pure sine wave is necessary (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here).The inverter needs to have AC pass-thru / transfer switch capability so that when I'm on shore power the inverter isn't being used (or consuming battery power)....rather it should just pass the AC voltage/current thru the unit to the appliance.The Xantrex freedom HF's would be fine (if it didnt have a charger or i could disable the charger).Id even settle for the Xantrex ProSine (2.0) but again its got a built in charger that i don't need.Are there any inverters available (with built in transfer switches) that permit disabling the charger or don't have a charger built in ??

My inverter, Magnum 4024, you can turn the charger on or off, and if you look into it you may find that you can turn off the charger on most inverters. You can get an external automatic transfer switch for around $50. I'm not aware of any low-end, low powered (non-pure sine, 1,000 watts or thereabouts) that have no charger but do have a built in ATS. I picked up a really inexpensive 1,000 watt pure sine inverter last year (around $180) and paired it with a 30 amp transfer switch that I already had to put in my car trailer.Brian

You want a Xantrex Prowatt SW- sine wave, 540, 900 or 1800 watts, no charger,but... you do need to add an external transfer switch.Should be in the $300-350 range for the 540 watt plus xfer.For MSW, I installed a 1kw PRO Series several years ago, MSW, built in xfer switch, detachable control panel. In heavy use every day with no problems.

Go to Don Rowe and get the Xantrex transfer switch for $50 and use whatever inverter you like.

I see now that the ProSine 2.0 has an included remote (which can be mounted on the inverter or the wall) that does permit the disabling of the charger....its a bit more than i wanted to spend (and the reviews of it are fairly consistent/bad).Ive also just learned that the Xantrex PRO XM (1000 or 1800) also provides "pass thru" when on shore power (and does not include a charger function).

You can always buy a box and make your own. Here is one from Surplus sales

I would choose to purchase a pair. Each relay carries load OR neutral. Double pole 25-amp rated, 50 amps total on paper but I would limit amperage totals to around 35 max.

Also when choosing an inverter make sure it is compatible with an RV system. Some inverters do not like the 120v ground connected to the 12-.

Instructions will have a warning, read and understand install before you click and buy.

I found a Xantrex at amazon, comes in 1000w, 1800w inverter with built in transfer switch, NO Charger, in the $500 range, that is what I am leaning toward.

depends on which comment / links you look at (that i provided).

After reading the manuals (on-line) yesterday i discovered that the charger in the ProSine 2.0 can be disabled with the included remote and it also includes a built in transfer switch for pass-thru.

The Pro XM also includes a built in transfer switch for pass thru and it does not have a charger.

There are several transfer switches by different brands for different prices. I do not know which features make the more expensive ones worth it, but if you are in the market you would know what you want.

I gather transfer speed might be one difference, so you don't have to reset the television settings or whatever. Here are some examples:

I like the Samlex PST series. Randy at best has them and there is probably a reason why. i'm not a fan of Xantrex but know many are and I might be wrong for thinking that but I know the Samlex is VERY good.

feel free to read all the replies - there are SEVERAL manufactured inverters that don't have chargers or allow you to turn the charger off - I even followed up w/ information and posted links so that people would learn & know there are units available that meet the criteria of pass-thru (built in transfer switch) as well.

Because i don't want to constantly be drawling from & charging the batteries (if i don't have to).

More importantly - i often DISCONNECT my batteries when on shore power, i don't always rely on the built in converter/charger to maintain my batteries (when in storage)...rather i use an external intelligent battery maintainer (i.e. battery tender / batteryminder).
