Surge protectors

If you had to choose between a Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X and a Southwire Surge Guard 34950 which would you buy? I'm on a seasonal sight so I'm plugged into campground shore power 24/7.

Full agreement: Hint if they are going to charge you by the KW there will be meters at each site.

Info: SOME STATES. (And before you ask I do not know which ones) have laws that limit what a campground may charge you the site "Guest" for eelctricty to that which the campground paid for it. They do not allow the CG to profit. and as I said I do not know which states do this.

You get hit with $0.29/KWH you might want to check the state law.

Personally I'd rather just have a daily rate and be done with it.

Thanks for that. As I said I went with Southwire after the original TRC plug in failed... The TRC was old (Several years) and the display was sun damaged (Being a plug in) the new Southrire Surge Guard is out of the sun (being a HW model) and the remote display is indoors out of the sun.

As I said I had one time the outlet failed (not part of the unit) I cleaned it and adjusted the slot and it's all good now.

And when the park had a problem last week half my "Diagnosis" time was elminated by step one: Look at Surge Guard Display.. L2 1 V.. So that's the problem. Shore side as it truned out Had a chat with the manager. we swapped the 20 and 30 amp breakers in my box and I was back up on 30 amps till day before yesterday when they shut down the entire seciton. then yesterday they brought it back up on 50 amps with brand new wires under the road...

Glad I'm not the one paying for it 🙂

"Surge Protection" in most device is a joke. What you get is SPIKE supression (A bunch of MOV's Metal Oxide Varisistors)
But a true surge,, lasting more than a fraction of a second. those turn into firecrackers (been here, heard the show).

The HW-50C or the Southwire competing product will shut off power if that happens to protect you

The Autoformer helps with low voltage and one model with slightly high but if it goes too low/high the autoformer is overwhelmed.. If you plug into 220 by mistake the device is of no use (And may well fry)

But the HW-50C or the Southwire equivalent. WILL PROTECT YOU.

I have had a PI for a long time and would replace with same. Never had a SG.

I have a 50A in house Progressive. Don't know about the others, but when I purchased mine in 2012 then installed it: Well I would not be without it. Saved me a couple of times.

Depends.. The Southwire has a 1 year warranty.. Last I checked (And this MAY have changed) the PI unit had a limited lifetime warranty (Limited to the original purchaser) Thus if I had my choice.. The PI.

However since the sale price on the Southwire was around half the cost of the PI unit when I bought it.. went with the Southwire + reomte.

my first southwire was a plug in (portale) I got basically free with a bad outlet.. I fixed the outlet and it worked fine for quite some time then one day.. NO POWER

The new one is a hard wired with remote but.... Due to the nature of my electrical set up I converted it to a plug in (used the plug and socket off the old one) Only problem I've had to date is with the socket and that was easily fixed. Oh and the Southwire is easier to install.

PI here. It's not even close. (Mine has been in service problem free since 2007.)
