time to change the hoses?

Hi Folks,

I did change the serpentine belt in 2009 when I bought this unit.

It is a 2004 V-10 with about 70,000 miles on it.

Is it time to consider replacing all the rubber hoses?
  • I tend to agree with those who would inspect vs replace ... but I might change my position if your using your rig in the boonies where a unexpected breakdown might mean life/death.

I have a 1996 P-30. Changed the serpentine belt at about 70k{starting to separate. Change trans fluid 3 times, brake fluid 3 times, and rear end fluid 3 times. MH has 100k miles on it. Inspect hoses yearly. Every 2-3 years I flush and drain the radiator. I remove the lower hose and drain and flush with a garden hose(with thermostat removed) look inside for any deterioration. My thought is when the lower hose looks bad I will change them all.
  • I'm still driving a 1992 GM van with 265 000 km on it. I remember changing the coolant once and again when the heater core failed, the transmission fluid twice, rear end gear oil once, brake fluid, alternator and water pump recently. I had one rad hose clamp break about 2002. Never changed any hoses. Pretty good stuff in that van for sure.
  • Hi,

I replaced the coolant in 2010. I do the tranny fluid every 50,000 kilometers.
  • I would just inspect the hoses. Unless you find a hose that is swelled, cracked, or leaking, I would not change them on a low mileage 04.

  • I changed the hoses on my 1999 built Cummins Aug 1998 last May.
Or over 15 years 9 months old.
Replaced the engine belt same time for their 2nd change.

I wouldn't just randomly change any hose due to age.

Instead I would recommend INSPECTING the hoses visually and by feeling the hoses for soft spots, cracking, weeping and such.

I have 200,000 miles on my 2003 F250, the hoses so far are still passing my visual and feel test..

I would however HIGHLY recommend that you inspect the transmission AND brake lines. A couple of years ago I had a rear brake line rust out behind the fuel tank, I had to haul the truck on my flat bed trailer to my mechanic. Cost me $200 to have the mechanic replace ALL the steel brake lines.

Recently just had a transmission cooler line develop a pin hole near the radiator. I replaced the steel with rubber transmission line for a quick fix. Took 6 quarts of fluid out of 17.7 quarts capacity and that was only driving 4 miles to get home.
  • I waited 12 years 180,000 miles to replace radiator and heater hoses on my 5.4L F150.
If you are due for new coolant it might be a good time vs waiting another 5 years.
