Water pump winterizing question

I see there is a handpump available to push RV antifreeze into the RV using the city water connection. Does this not leave the water pump unprotected since there should be a functional one way valve preventing city water from entering the fresh water tank and pressurizing the water pump? So, do I have to disconnect the water pump inlet and pull RV antifreeze through the pipes that way? Or does the water pump have some kind of drain to protect it from freezing? Planning on winterizing the water system this week.
  • Thanks. I watched the Camco vids on using the hand pump and the bypass valve. Doubled checked my pump connections and ordered the bypass valve kit, expected in Monday, Amazon Prime.

Add a winterizing kit to your pump if it is accessible enough for you to do it. It hooks up in line with the tank suction line and has a valve you can turn to draw antifreeze out of the jug and into your water lines. Just open a faucet and turn on the pump. easy. Look on line for video of how to do this.

  • The guy in this video really explains the whole winterizing process really well. Watch for the part where he explains how to connect a hose to the pump to suck antifreeze into the system. That is so much better than putting it in the fresh tank.

  • Hand pump is unnecessary, use the trailer's fresh water pump to draw RV antifreeze directly from the jug and distribute it throughout the trailer's water system. To displace water in that section of hose from the city water inlet to the point where it T's into the trailer's water system (at the pump output) simply remove the city water inlet filter screen and push the check valve in ... just make sure you do this with pressure relieved a bit so you don't displace the rubber seal in the check valve assembly from excessive pressure.
