Water Softener on Vacation

Question

I use a Travelsoft softener on my rig for 6-7 months thru the summer traveling months. In the fall we are in Arizona and hooked to a regular residential softener. Last spring when we started using the Travelsoft it seemed to have molded and the water smelled for quite a while. I regenerated with 1/2 cup of bleach about 4 times before it cleared out. What do you do to stop this? When I took it out of service last fall, I ran it thru a regeneration cycle and drained it good and then put it in the basement till spring.

Couldn't you fill it with a solution that can't grow any bacteria or fungus while in storage?I've also seen that a complete media change won't break the bank. That may be the easiest course.

Next time you plan on storing it add couple cap fulls of bleach during regen cycle. (Same time you add the salt). Then finish regen and completely drain.

The bleach during regen should stop any bacteria growth during storage
